New photos have emerged showing the forthcoming return of Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Supernatural. Currently in season 14, Sam and Dean Winchester are having a typically rough time at present in The CW's long-running fantasy series. The evil archangel Michael is currently trapped in Dean's noggin and will not be contained for long, meaning that Dean must sacrifice himself in order to keep Michael from wreaking havoc upon the universe. Thankfully, Dean does have the support of his brother Sam, and his mother Mary, who was revived back in season 11.
Towards the end of last year, it was announced that a full-house of Winchesters is not too far away, as Jeffrey Dean Morgan is set to reprise his role as the boys' dad in the forthcoming 300th episode. Morgan's John Winchester appeared in Supernatural's debut season but ultimately gave his own life for Dean's. Morgan would appear once more as the character, albeit in ghost form, but has yet to appear since then, despite a strong desire for his return from the fanbase. Morgan has always spoken positively of his time on Supernatural and his absence is solely down to the actor constantly being in demand.
Over a decade since his last appearance however, John Winchester is finally back and The CW have now released the photos to prove it (via TV Line). The images show Morgan's John Winchester reuniting with each of his sons, as well as his wife, in the Winchesters' bunker. They appear to show the entire family sharing a drink, some food and several heartfelt conversations.
Supernatural fans will perhaps find themselves in unfamiliar territory, as the Winchester reunion looks like an utterly joyous affair, free of demons, ghouls or any of the other paranormal nastiness that usually curtails any happiness that Sam and Dean experience. It appears that long-time Supernatural fans will finally be getting all of the emotional father-and-son conversations they've been craving for years, but the photo of John and Dean in deep discussion hints at a more serious undertone, perhaps connected to the Michael situation.
It has already been revealed that John Winchester's return comes about after the Winchester brothers are granted a wish but it's not clear how this will impact Supernatural going forward. The most important question is whether or not the return of John Winchester will have any lasting implications for the remainder of season 14, or whether the 300th episode special will strictly be a fan-pleasing, celebratory affair.
Supernatural season 14 continues with "Prophet And Loss" January 31st on The CW.
