Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester on Supernatural, had a clause to keep the iconic 1967 Chevrolet Impala put in his Season 15 contract. For over a decade, Supernatural has followed the sons of John Winchester, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean, who were raised "saving people and hunting things." What started out as a seemingly serialized/monster of the week show in 2005, has expanded into a deep (and sometimes convoluted) mythology. The monster-hunting brothers have battled everything from urban legend to biblical figures; they’ve done all this while traveling across the country in the car given to Dean by their father.

Dean’s “Baby” has arguably become as much of a character on Supernatural as its heroes themselves. From their initials carved in, army man Sam crammed into the ashtray, and classic rock on the radio to the supplies and weapons they keep in its trunk, the Impala’s significance has even prompted God AKA Chuck himself to call it “the most important object, in pretty much the whole universe.” That said, Ackles recently revealed that he finally managed to convince Supernatural’s producers to let him take home his character’s beloved car when filming on the finale season wraps.

During an appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Ackles reiterated that Warner Bros. has sanctioned for him to be handed the keys to the Impala when filming wraps in a few weeks. When Rosenbaum asked if it had been in his contract and if so, what season had he asked, Ackles replied, “I’ve been talking about that for two years now and they finally added that to my contract this last season.” Ackles also revealed that the double of the Impala was offered to Padalecki, but he doesn’t know if he’s going to take it because it’s pretty beat up.

To remember his time with Supernatural, Ackles said that he’s going to clean up his contractual wrap gift but not change anything, keeping the creaks in the doors and splits in the seats. He will add an air-conditioning unit (because he lives in Texas), new speakers, and a stereo that actually works. For any fans living in Texas, it’ll certainly be nostalgic to see Ackles driving around in “Baby” listening to what will presumably be Bob Seger on the radio.

The Supernatural community has grown exponentially thanks to the show’s impressive longevity, fan conventions, and charitable efforts. It’s ironic that a show with a central theme of family has resulted in such an unwavering fanbase. As the Winchesters set out to kill God, the biggest question for many doesn’t revolve around how the heroes will manage to do so, but how it will feel knowing there won’t be a sixteenth season when the credits roll on episode 20. It will undoubtedly be an emotional moment for long-time fans as well as the cast and crew, but at least Ackles will get to drive off in the show's signature Impala.
