In the world of Supernatural, there are not large numbers of humanity who know about supernatural creatures. That’s primarily due to the community of hunters who keep the world safe. Families like the Winchesters have extended networks of friends and colleagues as they hunt down the creatures who seek to destroy people.

Most hunters don’t have any skills we would perceive as magical. They wouldn’t really need to go to Hogwarts to understand that rock salt keeps a poltergeist away or dead man’s blood can slow down a vampire. If they did go to Hogwarts, however, they might learn some new tricks. Not every brave hunter would wind up in Gryffindor. Instead, just how they approach hunting would motivate the sorting hat to place them in a variety of Hogwarts houses.

Bobby Singer: Ravenclaw

Bobby Singer In Supernatural Ravenclaw

Bobby is as brave and sneaky as hunters come. The difference between Bobby and most hunters, however, is that he looks before leaping. Bobby was all about planning and doing the research, like any good Ravenclaw.

Less active in the field, Bobby acted as a home base of sorts for hunters. He maintained a day job with his salvage yard, and also maintained multiple phone lines for different “agencies” to give hunters cover. His working knowledge of the supernatural saved just about any hunter he came into contact with, and he amassed a huge collection of books and artifacts to continue his research.

Claire Novak: Slytherin

Claire Novak In Supernatural Slytherin

Unlike many hunters in early seasons of Supernatural who grew up in a family of hunters, Claire was the daughter of an angelic vessel. Her father became Castiel’s permanent vessel so she wouldn’t have to. Claire’s introduction to the world of angels and demons created obsession.

Her adrenaline-fueled hunts and living on the edge could make her a hot-headed Gryffindor, but she’s actually got more in common with Slytherins. She takes to deception very well, preferring to lie her way out of events instead of taking them head on. Claire is also ambitious - intending on becoming a hunter and living life on her own terms regardless of what anyone says.

John Winchester: Gryffindor

John Winchester In Supernatural Gryffindor

Having his memories wiped repeatedly in his twenties meant John didn’t actually learn about hunting supernatural creatures until he and Mary had kids. He got into the game late, but when he did, he made it count. John is a Gryffindor.

Much of John’s time as a hunter is motivated by his loyalty to his wife and family. He’s consumed by a need for revenge, and that need makes him braver than most. He also puts in the work and the research once he realizes what he’s up against. John could have gone the route of Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, but his sheer will power, his need to be the one in the middle of the fight to protect everyone else, made him a Gryffindor.

Ellen And Jo Harvell: Huffelpuff

Ellen And Jo Harvelle In Supernatural Hufflepuff

It’s hard to separate this mother and daughter since so much of their time on the show was together. How lucky then that their strong sense of loyalty to the hunting community, and their strong need for family connection, put them in Hufflepuff.

Jo started working toward being a hunter at a very young age. She wanted to feel connected to her father and do some good in the world. Though Ellen disapproved, eventually the two teamed up to hunt together. They were also the few hunters the audience saw create a home away from home for other hunters. Ellen might not have wanted her daughter to grow up to be a hunter, but she raised her around them at the Roadhouse, and both women worked day and night to create a community where hunters could rest.

Krissy Chambers: Slytherin

Krissy Chambers In Supernatural Slytherin

Raised by her hunter father after her mother was killed by a monster, Krissy never hid from the life. Instead, she embraced it, keeping up with her father’s cases and research before she ever attempted hunting on her own. Pragmatic and a survivor, the sorting hat places Krissy in Slytherin.

When she first met the Winchesters, Krissy was already an adept liar and negotiator, working her way into hunting with Dean when both her father and Sam went missing. Though Krissy eventually agreed to attempt living a normal life, her stint hunting vampires with other teens proved she was on her way to being a capable hunter. Krissy admitted to Dean that even if she didn’t hunt intentionally, she would always do what she needed to make sure she survived.

Charlie Bradbury: Ravenclaw

Despite her immense bravery and loyalty, Charlie doesn’t end up in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. Instead, her drive to learn everything she can about the subjects that interest her make her a lock for Ravenclaw.

First introduced as a hacker, Charlie is able to achieve seemingly impossible feats with computers. She’s so good that the Winchesters even ask her to hack a computer that’s over 50 years old - and she does it. It’s her never ending quest for knowledge about the supernatural world that leads her to become a hunter, even if she only picked up hunting as a hobby.

Mary Winchester: Hufflepuff

Mary Winchester In Supernatural Hufflepuff

Mary Winchester was a seriously skilled hunter growing up. That didn’t mean she enjoyed it. She stayed in the life only because her family needed her. Mary went out of her way to walk away from the life, only picking up a weapon when she had to protect someone else. Her devotion to the people she cared about - and her need to put them first - made her a clear Hufflepuff.

Mary gave up her chance at a normal life repeatedly, first for her parents, then her friends, and then her own children, so that other people wouldn’t have to be in danger. Even following her resurrection, her boys always came first. She did a lot of things they didn’t like, like work with the British Men Of Letters behind their backs, all in the name of protecting them.

Gordon Walker: Slytherin

Gordon Walker In Supernatural Slytherin

Gordon had a lot of Gryffindor traits. He could be impulsive and reckless, and he allowed his emotions to guide his hunting. Gordon also allowed his own judgements and feelings to determine the best course of action, and he was willing to manipulate those around him, so the sorting hat had to sort him into Slytherin.

One of Gordon’s old stand-bys in the Supernatural world was using innocent people/creatures as bait. Gordon wasn’t above using his friends either. He often went after anything and anyone supernatural, regardless of whether they hurt humans. That’s an awful lot like the often Slytherin led belief that witches and wizards needed to be pure of blood.

Sam Winchester: Ravenclaw

Sam Winchester In Supernatural Ravenclaw

Sam never wanted to be a hunter. He tried to live a normal life, attending Stanford with plans to go to law school, but his father going missing and his girlfriend being attacked by a demon derailed those plans pretty definitely. He still has the intelligence and logical thinking of a lawyer, which is why he sorts right into Ravenclaw.

Like Bobby, Sam is methodical in his handling of supernatural creatures. He prefers to research everything as far as possible before jumping into a fight. That tends to allow him to better think on his feet as well since he doesn’t have to waste time in the fight figuring out where he’s going wrong.

Dean Winchester: Gryffindor

Dean Winchester In Supernatural Gryffindor

Dean Winchester picked up a lot from his family. Like his mother, he’s got an intense loyalty to the people he cares about. Like his brother, he’s willing to examine all angles of a situation before diving in, and like his father, he’s a hero who is always willing to fall on his sword to do the right thing. Of them all, he has the most in common with his Gryffindor father, landing in the same Hogwarts house.

Dean just might be the bravest and most accomplished of any hunter in Supernatural. Brave, selfless, and willing to do everything to protect his family and the rest of the world, he’s a hero in every sense of the word.
