Supernatural season 3 episode "Mystery Spot" is a perfect parody of Groundhog Day, especially with its use of Asia's "Heat Of The Moment." Supernatural arrived in 2005 and follows the Winchester brothers Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki). They hunt evil creatures and other supernatural foes, with the first season focusing on their quest to find their missing father John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The show's easy mix of horror and humor saw it run for an impressive fifteen seasons.

Supernatural's "Mystery Spot" episode found it experimenting with a time loop concept. Groundhog Day is the most famous example of this subgenre, which found Bill Murray as a misanthropic weatherman trapped in the same day. Harold Ramis' film is now regarded as a comedy classic, with other time loop movie examples including Source Code, Live Die Repeat - AKA Edge Of Tomorrow - and Blumhouse's Happy Death Day duology.

Groundhog Day is considered the one to beat, however, and Supernatural's "Mystery Spot" makes no secret of its blatant homage to it. The episode opens with Sam waking to the sounds of Asia's "Heat Of The Moment" on the radio, with Dean being lovably obnoxious about singing along. They're investigating a case involving the disappearance of a man near a local mystery spot attraction, but when they break in later that night to investigate, Dean is accidentally shot dead by the nervous owner.

Sam holds a dying Dean in his arms

That's when Sam awakens to Asia's "Heat Of The Moment" - which is itself a nod to Groundhog Day's use of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" - to find Dean alive and the day repeating itself. Supernatural's "Mystery Spot" finds Sam suffering through many more deaths of his brother, including by car accident, angry dog and even tacos. The emotionally drained Sam finally realizes The Trickster - AKA Gabriel - they confronted in season 2 is behind the loop, which is designed to make Sam suffer as he constantly fails to save Dean. The loop ends after Dean dies for good following a mugging.

Supernatural "Mystery Spot" then jumps ahead six months to a vengeance-seeking Sam hunting The Trickster, and ignoring calls from a concerned Bobby. The latter finally fools him into a meeting by pretending to know a way to summon the demon, only to be shocked when Sam is open to his pretend suggestion of killing a civilian to bring Dean back. Of course, Sam finally realizes this Bobby is The Trickster in disguise, and the latter explains the whole ordeal was to make Sam realize his true weakness is Dean and he's better off without him. Regardless, Sam begs him to return his brother to life, and he reawakens back in the same hotel room with a living Dean. In addition to its witty take on Groundhog Day and a liberal sprinkling of "Heat Of The Moment," Supernatural "Mystery Spot" is considered one of the show's best episodes. It's funny, emotional and puts a strong focus on the bond between Sam and Dean.
