Supernatural season 15 has revealed where the show's various Gods came from and the real reason they fell from favor. As Sam and Dean Winchester head valiantly towards their final battle, the focus is firmly on Chuck, the one true God and creator. Although Chuck's God is presented predominantly in the context of western Christianity, Supernatural has also dipped into other sources of lore, and taken influence from an array of cultures and religions. The Winchester brothers have encountered the likes of Zeus, Osiris, Kali, Artemis and many more, but some depictions have stirred a little controversy among viewers.

In terms of The Old Gods (the assorted Roman, Greek, Norse and Pagan varieties) Supernatural's earlier seasons established how these historical figures drew power from human worship, and once modern societies no longer deified them, their strength dwindled drastically. Supernatural's heavenly setup also confirmed that Chuck was not the God of one specific religion, with Earth's belief systems all merely interpretations of the same story. These two explanations helped account for how so many conflicting Gods could exist within the same universe, but it seems there was still a large chunk of lore missing.

In this week's "The Gamblers," Sam and Dean attempt to get their luck back after being cursed by God and stripped of their privileges as heroic protagonists. They wind up at a pool hall run by the Roman Goddess of Luck, Fortuna, and try to hustle themselves to victory over the ancient being. In between shooting pool, however, Fortuna reveals the real history behind her and the other Old Gods. The forgotten deity reveals that when humans first came into existence, they didn't offer their thanks and adulation to Chuck, but to the sun, nature, luck, etc. This lack of recognition royally ticked Chuck off, his ego wounded by mankind giving credit to the creation instead of the creator.

Supernatural Gods

Chuck's solution was to create The Old Gods, which would serve a dual purpose. On one hand, the "lesser" deities could take the blame for mankind's hardships, and on the other, the new creations would make for excellent players in Chuck's ongoing narrative - the same role currently held by Sam and Dean. Much like the Winchesters, however, Chuck eventually got bored of the Gods' story and dropped them for a new project. This lore-expanding scene somewhat contradicts the backstory already in place for The Old Gods, but Fortuna accounts for this discrepancy by claiming "most Gods have forgotten," and her position as one of the eldest forgotten deities means her account is the full truth of what happened.

Altering the history of the Gods' creation at this late stage in Supernatural's lifespan makes sense, given what has recently come to light about Chuck. In past seasons, God was presented as either a complete mystery or an ally of the Winchesters. Only in Supernatural's season 14 finale did it transpire that Chuck was actually the big bad of the entire series, and an egotistical, fragile storyteller with little regard for humanity. Fortuna's account fits this characterization and adds to the list of shady acts Chuck has already committed, such as controlling Sam and Dean's lives, running away from heaven and cancelling Firefly after only one season (presumably).

Fortuna-tely, Chuck's past misdemeanors mean plenty of powerful figures hold a grudge against God, and this can only help the Winchesters in their forthcoming battle.
