For the past 15 years, the ever-popular show Supernatural has been a staple for many horror and dark fantasy fans. What makes the show so great, is that while it's full of scary and disturbing moments that make us leave the light on at night, it has some great comedic bits as well.

Despite primarily being about two hunters tracking monsters, the show is also about two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, traveling the country and trying to get along. This was especially so during the first season when they first started traveling together. Here are the five funniest and five scariest episodes of Supernatural season one.

Funniest: Skin

Truth be told, the first season of Supernatural doesn't have as many funny episodes as the later seasons do. The show does lean more into the horror genre than a dark comedy. However, that's not to say there aren't funny moments within the episodes.

"Skin" is a somewhat spooky episode that follows the boys fighting a shapeshifter, and yet there's still a sense of humor to it. Watching the Winchester boys trying to figure out which one is real and which one is the shifter is a somewhat humorous affair.

Scariest: Pilot

When searching for evidence of horror and scares in Supernatural, there's no better place to look than in the brothers' first adventure. The pilot episode of Supernatural has enough humor between the brothers to help make the show likable but still makes its mark as a horror show.

Throughout the episode, viewers are terrorized by images of bloodthirsty ghosts, people burning alive, and even the first tease of demons. With little effort, the pilot episode established the tone of the show as a dark fantasy horror adventure unlike any other.

Funniest: Route 666

Throughout the Supernatural's entire run, they have gone through just about every monster there is, from reimaginings of popular myths to even the Devil himself. Along the way, however, the writers decided to come up with ideas a little more out there, such as a possessed car.

The very notion of Sam and Dean facing off against a possessed car is enough to make anyone grin just a little bit. It ended up being a sign of other ridiculous yet amazing ideas to come in later seasons.

Scariest: Bloody Mary

It goes without saying that most everyone has heard the myth of Bloody Mary at least once in their lives. The thought of just looking into a mirror and summoning a murderous ghost is scary on its own and yet, Supernatural managed to take expand upon the legend.

Spinning Bloody Mary into a spirit that's attached to a single mirror is a terrifying thought. It makes the audience wonder if there mirror maybe contains the ghost's spirit and by saying her name, they'll summon her and become her next victim.

Funniest: Bugs

It goes without saying, that any kind of creepy-crawly is scary to look at. From spiders to centipedes, insects can give anyone a fright... if it's one bug. In the episode "Bugs," it's proven that strength in numbers isn't always a given.

When the boys fight back against a ghost controlling insects, one would assume that it would be a scary affair. However, due to the early 2000's CGI, it is instead a hilarious attempt at making a swarm of fake bees seems scary and makes audiences chuckle every time.

Scariest: Asylum

There always seems to be an episode much like "Asylum" that has a haunted house style plot to it. Like with most things in Supernatural, however, "Asylum" spins what would be an overdone story on its head and delivers a taut and chilling tale.

Just watching the Winchester brothers work their way through a haunted asylum, but what sells it is when Sam attacks Dean, being manipulated by the ghost. Being attacked by the ones people hold dear is enough to make anyone shiver.

Funniest: Hell House

Something that makes Supernatural so good is the sibling rivalry between Sam and Dean. While they spend much of their time hunting monsters and protecting people, at the end of the day, their still two brothers living together and "Hell House" captures this perfectly.

While the episode handles the brothers investigating a haunting, it also shows them in the midst of a prank war between each other. It gives the viewers some amazing and hilarious scenes and gives us a grounded look at the Winchester brothers.

Scariest: Scarecrow

Why is it that inanimate objects coming to life have become such a staple in horror? From dolls to mannequins to even a tire once, when an object suddenly has a mind of its own is when the audience is at their most horrified.

"Scarecrow" is no exception. Not only is it creepy that the higher-ups of the town are behind this creepy scarecrow coming to life and killing people, but the scarecrow itself is more than enough to induce nightmares for weeks to come.

Funniest: Phantom Traveler

Dean Winchester for many fans is seen as the better of the Winchester brothers although there are plenty of Sam fans out there. Witty and equipped with a tough as nails attitude, Dean appears to be afraid of nothing.

At least, until the "Phantom Traveler" episode, where the brothers have to hunt for a ghost on a plane, and it's revealed Dean has a fear of flying. Throughout the episode, there are multiple jokes and bits where the Winchester brother becomes afraid of flight, making for a hilarious episode.

Scariest: Nightmare

A lot of the time, the thing that scares horror fans more than anything is the monster within us all. When the creature is a simple mindless beast, audiences are still horrified and scared but when the beast turns out to be a human being; that makes the horror seem even more real.

Throughout the episode "Nightmare," it's believed that there's some kind of devious being at work and yet, in the end, it's revealed the monster is a young boy with psychic abilities. Talk about a twist ending.
