The CW’s Supernatural has given us a whole lot of characters to follow, with Castiel being among the topmost of these characters. He was introduced as a powerful angel, one who sparked fear in demons and proved his worth too. However, Castiel’s strength has been severely downgraded over the years, leading people to doubt just which demons he could fight and which ones who could kill him.

For this list, we’ve mainly taken into consideration the demons Castiel either didn’t fight, had minimal interaction, or match-ups people still have doubts over. You’ll find some familiar names and some surprising ones here, so read on further to see Supernatural's Castiel’s chances in these potential fights.

Weaker: Abaddon

This is definitely going to be a highly debatable point, as Abaddon happened to be a Knight of Hell, which made her among the highest class of demons. And yet, she was seen fearing the prospect of battling a regular angel, even when angels had been stripped of a lot of their powers.

Being a Seraph, Castiel has more juice to him than any other angel, which suggests that Abaddon wouldn’t have had it easy against him. With Abaddon lacking the Mark of Cain too, we’re inclined to believe that Castiel would’ve overpowered her.

Stronger: Dean Winchester

Sam and Castiel try to cure Dean of being a demon in Superatural

Yes, we’re aware that it was Castiel who restrained Dean when the latter tried to kill off Sam, as part of his final act as a demon, but don’t think it meant Castiel was stronger. It was because Dean had already been cured that Castiel could hold him back.

Since he possessed the Mark of Cain, Dean was the strongest demon alive at the time. Considering he had control of the First Blade, a weapon that could kill Castiel, it’s a no-brainer that a fully powered Demon Dean would finish Castiel.

Weaker: Meg Masters' Demon

Meg shows herself to be a demon in Supernatural

Fans remember Meg to be the one that got away for Castiel, with their potential love story being cut short. However, they did have an original antagonism, and Castiel used her to walk over an angel trap in Season 5.

Meg did have some nifty powers in her arsenal, being able to torture Crowley at one point, but she was still close to being a regular angel and that made her outmatched by Castiel. Still, a Season 1 Meg going up against Castiel would make for an interesting contest.

Stronger: Tempter Demon

We only got a preview of a match-up between Castiel and this Apocalypse World demon, but it was clear the latter had the upper hand. In case you don’t remember, Tempter demons were mutated forms native to the alternate universe.

They might have been normal demons in that world, but the one we saw did manage to fling Castiel around and could even have ended him had Alternate Bobby not killed it. Since the alternate universe beings were generally more powerful than the main universe’s, we’re inclined to believe regular demons here were stronger than Castiel.

Weaker: Ruby

We only just saw Castiel interact with Ruby in the fifteenth season, which confirmed that Ruby was always someone who had worked behind the scenes rather than confront someone directly. Even when Castiel was a regular angel, this fight would be in his favor.

Ruby did display a level of telekinetic powers and a sharp mind, but it still didn’t give her enough to be able to contend with angels. Plus, she did almost get killed by a human in Dean Winchester, meaning Castiel would’ve been too strong in a hand-to-hand fight.

Stronger: Samhain

Samhain stares ahead in Supernatural

It’s too bad we didn’t get a match-up between Samhain and Castiel back in Season 4, seeing as that was when angels were shown to be at their strongest. Being a demon of unknown origin, Samhain seemed not to possess fear of angels.

Back then, demons would be confronted by angels if the latter could directly kill them, which tells us that Castiel would have been out of his league with Samhain. The angels had plans to destroy the town Samhain rose from rather than confront him, so it’s safe to say this is a fight Castiel wouldn’t want.

Weaker: Belphegor

Supernatural Belphegor and Cas in Hell

It’s unknown exactly what kind of demon Belphegor really was, considering he was possessing Jack’s eyeless corpse. However, he could have been a unique breed since he was under the tutelage of the Grand Torturer of Hell Alastair.

While he might have been stronger than Castiel where strategy is concerned, Belphegor clearly wasn’t up to the task when facing him. Surprisingly, he managed to get an upper hand on Castiel without engaging him, before the latter made it a moot point by smiting Belphegor.

Stronger: Azazel

Azazel possesses a reaper

Back when demons hadn’t been properly introduced, Azazel scared the daylights out of the audience due to his incredible powers. It was later revealed that he was a Prince of Hell, making him one of the apex demons out there.

Castiel wound up losing pretty badly to Azazel’s siblings in Dagon and Ramiel, both of whom had been lower in the ranks of Hell to Azazel. This confirms that Castiel would have been all too easy for Azazel to take out had they ever crossed paths.

Weaker: Crowley

Crowley holds out his hands while showing off power in Supernatural

While Crowley might be at the very top if you take into account the power of the mind, we’re strictly considering inherent powers here. In that regard, he falls well short of Castiel, whom he had always avoided picking a fight with and would generally joke around to stall for time.

It’s relatively surprising to see Crowley here, considering he was the King of Hell, but for all the powers he got for being a red-eyed demon Crowley still generally picked on those weaker than him. Against Castiel, Crowley almost got smote in the Season 6 finale had it not been for Raphael protecting him.

Stronger: Lilith

Lilith’s credibility as a force has been taken away due to her never being pitted against angels, and the one time she was it turned out to be the archangel Michael whom she faced. However, Lilith’s powers were always far superior than other demons, and she was the one all of her kind reported to.

Since the white-eyed Alastair bested Castiel in their fights, it’s safe to say that Lilith also wouldn’t have had any problems facing him. She was powerful enough for God to resurrect her from the Empty and send off to Michael, and it was the latter who ultimately killed her.
