In Supernatural, nearly every friend of the Winchester brothers tends to meet an untimely end. Some of those friends or allies willingly sacrificed themselves to protect or help the Winchesters as well as to assist in the Winchester mission. The brothers inspire loyalty. Perhaps because both Sam and Dean would willingly help their friends and put themselves in harm's way to do it. This is something that they learned from their father, another Winchester, who sacrificed himself for his family. For Sam and Dean, their idea of family extends to their friends.

When Donna's niece is taken in Season 13, the brothers go out of their way to help even though it didn't initially seem like one of their cases. When their father's friend asks for their help at the prison where he serves as warden in Season 2, the brothers actually get themselves imprisoned in order to help him. Although in these situations, Dean was the more loyal one, having to convince Sam to continue with the case, Sam now echoes Dean's value. Since these two would do a lot for their friends and allies, the friends and allies do the same. It's dangerous to befriend a Winchester, but in the world of the Winchesters--it's also dangerous not to befriend them.

Rowena

Rowena McLeod in Supernatural

While Rowena said that she wasn't doing this for the boys or the mission, but rather because she believed in magic, would she have sacrificed herself in the past? We don't think so. When things were going bad in the past, Rowena actually was willing to time travel or world travel in order to escape the situation.

However, in the later seasons, Rowena changed, becoming someone who loved the Winchesters (especially Sam) and becoming someone who they could count on. She literally died by the hands of Sam, and she sacrificed her long human life to save them all.

Ketch

By no means was Ketch an intimate friend of the Winchesters, but he became someone who they also could count on. He redeemed himself and his past dubious actions with their mother and as a tool of the British Men of Letters.

In Season 15, when a demon demands the location of the Winchesters, he dies rather than give them up.

Gabriel

Gabriel is killed by Alternate Michael in Apocalypse world in Supernatural

Our favorite archangel, who we thought was dead in other seasons, really does die in Season 13. In order to buy the Winchester brothers' time so that they can leave the alternate world and return home, he faces off against Alternate-World Michael.

This Michael is much worse than the Michael from Gabriel's world. He tells the boys that he isn't running anymore and tries to buys them enough time to leave. Although he's redeemed and the Winchester boys lived, we wanted more for our Gabriel, the nicest archangel we've met.

Crowley

Crowley in purgatory in Supernatural.

The King of Hell went soft, just a little, due to his affections for the Winchesters (especially Dean). At one point, Rowena, before she caught the Winchester bug, called him out for it, saying that it made him seem weak. However, Crowley's death and sacrifice was anything but weak.

In order to trap Lucifer in the alternate world and to save the boys, he did a powerful spell that required a life. Willingly, he gave his after telling the Winchesters, "Bye boys." A quote later said again by Rowena, his mother, during her sacrifice.

Benny

Benny LaFitte in Supernatural

Benny, the vampire who Dean met and befriended in Purgatory, sacrifices himself to save Sam. Although he fought hard alongside Dean to get out of Purgatory, he willing returns for Dean in order to save Sam. While there, he fends off other vampires so that Sam and Bobby can get out.

It may seem that he sacrificed himself for Sam (who never really trusted him), but really he did it for Dean, knowing that the loss of Sam would break Dean.

Meg

Meg meeting the gang with hellhounds in Supernatural

While Meg was a foe when she first met Dean and Sam, the demon changes. She develops feelings for Castiel, and she develops a bond with the brothers. She becomes an ally.

Once she sacrifices herself for the Winchesters and gets captured (and tortured) by Crowley, when Crowley was the big bad. Then ultimately, she stands off against Crowley to help Sam, telling Sam to, "Go, save your brother and my unicorn (Castiel)."

Pamela

Pamela Barnes in Supernatural

Initially in helping the Winchesters, Pamela loses her eyes by seeing Castiel in his heavenly form. Not too keen on angels after that, Pamela still helps the Winchesters when they need to get to the astral plan.

Since Pamela is a powerful psychic, she is one of the only ones who can help them. Once they are on the astral plan, Pamela stands guard over their bodies. This proves to be her demise as she protects their bodies from demons and is mortally wounded from that fight, later dying from her injuries.

Bobby

Bobby sacrificed himself time and time ago for his boys. When Lucifer was in Sam, Bobby actually died to stop him. However, Castiel brought him back to life.

Bobby had a hunter's life, and he died a hunter's death. Another big sacrifice that Bobby did for the Winchester brothers is that he initially gave up heaven so that he could stick around as a ghost and help them out.

Ellen and Jo

Ellen and Jo dying in season 5 supernatural

Jo, the romance that never really panned out with Dean, did die for the boys and their mission. She actually goes to save Dean from the hellhounds, ultimately leading to her own injury with them. Once mortally injured, she proposes being left behind in order to do an explosion, killing the rest of the hellhounds.

Ellen stayed behind with her daughter to help with the task and to see it out to the end. Both sacrificed themselves for the Winchesters and their mission. These two were interesting characters and strong women who were gone too soon in the series.

Charlie

Charlie in Supernatural

Poor Charlie. Charlie was like a sister to Sam and Dean, and she wanted to save Dean. At this time, Dean had the Mark of Cain and was growing increasingly violent. She did find a way to save him with a special spell and book. However, this book belonged to one scary family that would do anything to get it back. So while, Charlie did figure out a way to translate it, that action was her last action since she was brutally killed soon after. If she hadn't sought out the book or taken the time to translate it, our Charlie would still be alive today.

In an odd foreshadowing moment, Rowena told Charlie after Charlie confided that she loved the Winchesters like brothers, "I know, and that steadfast loyalty will be your undoing, my girl." Perhaps, it was Rowena's undoing as well; although she seems to be doing pretty well now as the Queen of Hell.
