Recently, Superman: Son of Kal-El was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award, and to celebrate, writer Tom Taylor has revealed a stunning cover for issue #10, on sale in print and digital this April. The book’s nomination caps a banner year for Jon Kent, who took over the mantel of Superman for his father; its nomination is also a win for LGBTQIA2S+ representation in comics.

Jon Kent is the son of Superman and Lois Lane and has many of his father’s powers. Jon Kent found himself thrust into the spotlight last year when he took over the mantle of Superman, while his father was in space, attempting to liberate the citizens of the hellish WarWorld from Mongul’s rule. In his first outing, Jon ran afoul of Henry Bendix, the fascist leader of the nation of Gamorra. Rescuing Gamorran refugees, Jon learned of a sinister plot brewing within the country’s borders, and it is only a matter of time before he must confront Bendix. While Jon has been struggling to find his way as the new Man of Steel, he has found a boyfriend and confidant in Jay Nakamura, a Gamorrean refugee. The two began dating, and the news that the new Superman had a boyfriend was picked up by the mainstream media outlets, and now the book has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award.

The cover shows Jon Kent flying high above a bright and sunny Metropolis skyline with the Daily Planet building in the background. The cover has been warmly received by fans, with over 2,500 likes and over 300 retweeets.

Superman: Son of Kal-El’s GLAAD Media Award nomination is not only a historic moment for both the Superman franchise and DC Comics, but for LBGTQIA2S+ representation as well. The last decade has seen enormous strides forward in representation of marginalized groups in North American comics. Jon Kent’s coming out may be the biggest step forward yet—he is not only Superman’s son, but he is now Superman himself. It was a bold step for the character, the creative team and DC Comics. Their hard work and dedication to diversity has been rewarded with a nomination for Outstanding Comic Book.

Writer Tom Taylor has handled the criticism directed at him with grace, making donations to LGBTQIA2S+ organizations for every hateful comment sent his way. Now, on the eve of Superman: Son of Kal-El’s GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Comic Book, Taylor has revealed the cover to April’s issue.
