Waller vs. Wildstorm will see Amanda Waller take on a number of WildStorm icons - including StormWatch. One of the earliest WildStorm titles, StormWatch was a United Nations sanctioned team, led by Battalion. The first few years of StormWatch were typical of Image’s fare in the early to mid 1990s, but the book achieved notoriety under the stewardship of Warren Ellis, who retooled the team with Bryan Hitch into the Authority. These characters were later bought by DC and incorporated into its fictional universe during the New 52 era. Now, on StormWatch’s 30th anniversary, they are set to make a splash on the DC Universe in Waller vs. Wildstorm. Yet not everyone is a fan - including Lois Lane.

Why StormWatch Are So Controversial

wildstorm's original incarnation of stormwatch

Lois’ dislike of StormWatch should come as no surprise. Various incarnations of the team, be it StormWatch or the Authority, have embraced ultra-violent solutions, and often consider themselves above any larger accountability. StormWatch often shrugged off international law and played fast and loose with the definition of “hero.” The team regularly intervened in world affairs - something Superman has always taken immense pains not to do. As someone who holds the powerful to account, Lois Lane can be expected to disapprove of StormWatch's autocratic tendencies, so it's not surprising that she's dreamed about taking them down since high school.

DC's more traditional heroes tend to come into conflict with WildStorm's vigilantes, as there's is a fundamental disconnect between Superman's ideal of saving the innocent and StormWatch's intent to exercise enough control over the world to ensure order and a more blanket safety. Indeed, in the now-legendary story “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?” Superman, disgusted with their ideals, took on the Elite, a pastiche of StormWatch/the Authority. However, if Lois Lane thinks that StormWatch are bad, she's got a shock coming when she takes on Amanda Waller - an operative who takes even WildStorm's vicious brand of 'heroism' to the next level, and will kill anyone to get what she wants.
