Perhaps the greatest appeal of superheroes is that they possess powers and abilities the average human being could only ever dream of. The fantasy of being able to fly or run faster than the speed of light or even to be physically stronger than anyone else holds such great appeal precisely because these attributes are so far removed from human reality.
The draw of these heroes is particularly heightened when two heroes are pitted against one another. Though Batman doesn’t possess any special powers per se, he is a fearless crime fighter with skills the average guy on the street likely doesn't possess. It’s arguable that the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is hotly anticipated precisely because it pits a human using his admittedly above-average skill set and tools against someone like Superman.
Because superheroes are so appealing, they have had no problem making the transition from comic books to video games, movies, and beyond. Any format that provides fans with the opportunity to lose themselves in the comic book universe is generally well received. This is clearly the concept behind the augmented reality display from Dubai based company Shooting Stars.
The display is currently housed at VOX Cinemas in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates and allows fans of Batman V Superman to see themselves as either Batman or Superman, strike a pose and have their photo taken. As you can see in the above video, the onscreen imagery is quite responsive, allowing fans to get creative with the short period of time they’re permitted to be one of the two heroes.
At first glance, it might appear that this setup could allow for two players to do battle on screen as Batman and Superman, but unfortunately that isn’t the case. The booth is purely a promotional tool for the movie and at present it isn’t clear as to whether or not it will be appearing in other cinemas around the world, prior to Dawn of Justice’s arrival.
Alright, sure – it’s a gimmick, but it is a rather creative one. From this video alone, the booth appears to be more responsive than any of the motion sensor controllers available for the major consoles. It might not be the most riveting manner in which to experience a tiny sample of what it’s like to be Batman or Superman, but at least fans can get a free unique photo and have fun eating up some time at the cinema before their movie starts.
