Natalie Dormer becomes Supergirl, joining Henry Cavill as Superman, in new DCEU fan art. The Man of Steel aka Kal-El began his run as America’s favorite superhero way back in 1938. Superman’s female counterpart Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, followed her cousin Superman into pop culture in Action Comics #252 in 1959.

Superman of course also made his way to the big screen first, receiving the big-budget movie treatment with Richard Donner’s Superman in 1978. Supergirl also arrived on the big screen in 1984 with Helen Slater in the lead role, but the movie was dismissed as cheesy. The female answer to Superman would indeed make a much better impression on viewers when Melissa Benoist took over the part for the TV series Supergirl, which began airing in 2015 and is still going strong. As for the modern day incarnation of the DC universe on film, Superman has famously made his mark with appearances in Man of Steel, Batman V Superman and Justice League. Meanwhile, Supergirl has yet to make the move to the DCEU.

As fans anticipate the day when Kara Zor-El arrives in the DCEU (if indeed she ever does), artist Yadvender Singh Rana offers up his own take on who might tackle the character on screen. See his art featuring Dormer as Supergirl and Cavill as Superman in the space below:

Dormer of course is best known for playing Margaery Tyrell on HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones, but she also made a big impression in movies like The Forest, In Darkness and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. The actress can currently be seen back on the small screen playing multiple roles in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Though Dormer certainly has plenty of credibility among fans of genre fare given her memorable turn on Game of Thrones, she may not in fact be the top choice to play Supergirl in the DCEU. Indeed, that distinction probably goes to Benoist, who has handled the role memorably on television and arguably deserves the chance to continue playing Kara on the big screen. Of course, DC does try to keep its TV and movie universes separate, casting different actors to play the big and small screen incarnations of characters like The Flash. Dormer seems like a popular choice to be Supergirl if the role doesn’t go to Benoist, but with so many rising female actors in Hollywood, it would probably be silly to focus on one person as the real favorite (and indeed, there are many more diversity-forward choices out there than either Benoist or Dormer).

Unfortunately, all discussion of who should play Supergirl in the DCEU is meaningless until DC actually goes ahead with a movie that includes the character. Recent reports that a planned DCEU Supergirl movie were put on hold do not bode well for the chances that Kara Zor-El will arrive on the big screen any time in the near future, but of course there’s always the possibility the character could be included in a team-up movie. Indeed, Superman himself has a shaky future in the DCEU after the failure of Justice League and the arrival of darker and grittier DC movies like Joker. It remains to be seen if there’s a place for any members of the Superman family in the DCEU going forward.
