Though Superman's stories are often known for epic battles between The Man of Steel and his many villains, they are also known for being very romantic. Often, that comes in the form of Superman's relationship with Lois Lane, but there have been other love stories told in the pages of Superman comics.

Not all of them made sense—in fact, some of the relationships found in the comics are mindboggling enough to make even Bizarro confused. Funnily enough, while Lois is the woman he will love with all his heart, Superman has actually been in many relationships, with many being strange.

Lucy Lane & Baron Ruthven

Lois Lane's sister Lucy is seduced by the evil vampire Baron Ruthven.

Lois Lane's sister Lucy has been in quite a few relationships in Superman stories, including being with Ron Troupe and Jimmy Olsen. However, the strangest relationship she was ever in was with the evil vampire Baron Ruthven.

Basically DC's answer to Count Orlok from Nosferatu, in Superman #70, Ruthven seduced Lucy Lane, making him his vampire bride. After Superman teamed up with Tim Drake a.k.a. Robin to defeat Ruthven, Lucy thankfully went back to normal.

Superman & Big Barda

Superman kisses Big Barda as her husband Mister Miracle is dragged away.

Perhaps the most infamous of Superman's conquests was none other than Big Barda. The former Female Fury is famously in a committed relationship with Mister Miracle, which makes the time that she almost made an adult film with Superman particularly peculiar.

Thankfully, it never went any further than a kiss, as Mister Miracle intervened, going after the villain Sleez, who got them into this mess. Superman got out of the situation faster than a speeding bullet, leading to the whole affair being swept under the rug.

Lois Lane & Batman

Lois Lane Marries Batman as Superman looks on from DC Comics

The Silver Age was a weird period for Superman, with bizarre romances occurring in one issue and then being promptly forgotten. Superman media has flirted with the idea of a Lois Lane-Bruce Wayne romance, with Superman: The Animated Series actually doing it pretty well, but it has never been weirder than when they became a couple in the comics.

The issue this takes place in, Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane #89, actually sees the two get married, with a morose Superman attending the wedding. They would even have a son in this issue, but it ended up being an imagined story.

Superman & Maxima

Maxima sets her sights on Superman in DC Comics.

Calling Superman and Maxima a couple would be incredibly generous, as, if they are a couple, it's an incredibly one-sided pair. First appearing in Action Comics #645, the fierce Maxima arrived on Earth to mate with Superman, claiming that she and The Man of Steel were genetically compatible.

Superman had zero interest in Maxima's proposal, even going as far as to say that he had no interest in being the father of tyrants. Maxima would try again, but she would be met with a firm rebuff once more, as Superman was married to Lois Lane at this point.

Lois Lane & Lex Luthor

A creepy looking Lois Lane robot flirts with Lex Luthor.

As is the case with Batman, comic storylines have toyed with the idea of pairing Lois Lane with Lex Luthor in a romantic capacity. The comics have shown Superman's greatest foe to be smitten with the ace reporter, but she shows little to no interest.

Things got a tad creepy when, in 2010, Action Comics saw a creepy-looking Lois Lane robot in a romantic relationship with Lex. The New 52 soon arrived, leaving this very odd couple trapped within the dustbins of history.

Superman & Wonder Woman

Superman kisses Wonder Woman as the DC Universe plays out in the background.

For decades, Superman and Wonder Woman's strong bond was purely platonic. However, when The New 52 rebooted the DC Universe, writer Geoff Johns decided to shake things up when Superman first kissed Wonder Woman in Justice League #12.

There were people who liked their romance, but the pairing of the two most powerful Justice League members prompted many hardcore fans to pull their hair out. With the original Superman being re-established, this pairing was wiped from the continuity.

Superboy & Wonder Girl

Superboy making out with Wonder Girl.

Unlike their mentors, the pairing of Conner Kent and Cassie Sandsmark, also known as Superboy and Wonder Girl, made a bit more sense. Serving as members of Young Justice and Teen Titans, their love developed throughout their time on both teams.

Sadly, this love story ends in tragedy, as Superboy was murdered by Superboy-Prime during the events of Infinite Crisis. Cassie would also date another Superboy in DCeased: Dead Planet, but, this time, it was Jon Kent, Superman's son.

Supergirl & Lex Luthor

Supergirl and her 90's boyfriend...Lex Luthor.

Out of all of the romances that happened in the pages of Superman comics, this one has to be one of the most uncomfortable. In the 1990s, the Matrix incarnation of Supergirl and a far more hairy Lex Luthor became an item.

At the time, Lex's mind was residing in a clone body, with the infamous villain pretending to be his own son. Sometime after Superman's death, Supergirl soon found out that Lex had cloned her, which sent her into a furious rage, and she went on a rampage that effectively put an end to their relationship.

Superman & Lori Lemaris

Superman kissing the mermaid Lori Lemaris.

Yes, Superman dated a mermaid! In Superman #129 from 1959, a flashback to Clark Kent's days attending Metropolis University shows him falling in love with Lori Lemaris, a young woman in a wheelchair. He even wanted to marry her, but she shot his proposal down.

Heartbroken by Lori dismissing his proposal, Superman followed the lead and soon discovered that Lori was a mermaid. Sadly, due to the two being from separate worlds, they couldn't get married, which means their relationship is dead and buried.

Supergirl & Comet, The Super-Horse

Supergirl, Streaky, Krypto, and Comet

Supergirl has had a lot of odd storylines, but her relationship with Comet The Super-Horse is not only her most unusual romance—it's also the grossest. After fantasizing about a strange white horse, Supergirl would soon encounter that exact same horse.

When a wizard turned Comet into a human being, the two soon fell in love. As creepy as that sounds, it's nowhere near as creepy as the fact that DC tried to make this relationship again in the 1990s, which somehow managed to be even more confusing.
