Warning: Minor SPOILERS for Superman #18
The days are ticking down until Superman reveals his secret identity to the world. It's guaranteed to be one of the most historic days in the history of the DC Comics Universe, and to make sure fans realize this is no stunt, DC is giving an early preview of the moment fans will need to see: when Superman shows Jimmy Olsen he's been his best pal, Clark Kent, this entire time.
The full event will unfold in Superman #18 coming to comic shops in December, and an earlier preview from DC confirmed the unveiling would be just that. With Superman holding a press conference to reveal his true, human, secret identity to the world all at once. But with writer Brian Michael Mendis maintaining that Clark Kent isn't going away, it makes sense for this preview to show the other side of this historic moment. Superman should make this announcement to the entire globe... but one person deserves to hear the truth from Clark Kent at the same time. And Jimmy Olsen responds in exactly the way fans would hope.
The preview pages seem to begin before Supes' worldwide press conference, showing Clark wrestling with the decision, weighing his closest friends an allies, the world's love of Superman, and apparently even the ability of Perry White's heart to take the surprise. The image of Clark marching towards The Daily Planet editor's office preparing to reveal his secret is sure to raise the pulse of fans, as well. But it's the pages following Superman's bombshell that Jimmy Olsen fans need to see. Take a look at the official preview pages below:
As Bendis explains to The Washington Post, Superman won't be losing his desire to work as a journalist just because he's shared his secret with the public:
I get why people would immediately think... that Clark Kent just goes away. Clark is a huge part of who [Superman] is. It’s who he grew up as. He’s not giving it up. He’s sharing it with people... I have to be careful with my wording, but, you know, this is Warner Bros., and they don’t do things willy-nilly and this was approved. They said, ‘Go for it. We see what you’re doing. We get it.’ It takes [Superman] into a place we would like to take him.
