With many still celebrating his return in Black Adam, Henry Cavill is reflecting on dealing with the rumors of his Superman return being revealed at San Diego Comic-Con. Cavill first debuted as the Kryptonian hero in the DC Universe with Man of Steel and carried the role forward through Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and both Justice League and Zack Snyder's Justice League. Following a variety of shifts in plans for the studio and franchise, Cavill's DCU future was left in limbo, namely as he went off to lead Netflix's The Witcher, though fans of his Man of Steel have a lot to look forward to.

While speaking with BBC One to discuss his work in Enola Holmes 2, Cavill reflected on dealing with the rumors of his Superman return being announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The star recalled trying to convince people he was not in fact going to be appearing at the convention, and having to keep the truth to himself after many were disappointed he didn't appear at SDCC. See what Cavill shared below:

There was a lot of — because, yeah, all the rumors were coming out whilst I was working. I had a lot of people going, “So, you’re going to Comic-Con?” and I was like, “No, I’m not,” and they’re like, “Ahh, but you are, aren’t you?” And I was like, “No, I’m not, really, I’m not, I’m not.” [Laughs] And then obviously having the other secret in the back of my head, I was just like, “Ah, I’m just going to have to ride this one out and see what happens.” Then, everyone was so disappointed, and I was like, “Okay, patience, patience, it will come.”

Why Fans Are So Passionate About Henry Cavill's Superman

Henry Cavill in Man of Steel with intense stare

Though critical and audience reception was divided for the films he was in, Cavill's Superman received largely favorable reviews across his three DCU appearances. With Snyder bringing a darker approach to the character, some critics took umbrage with the more serious tone in comparison to the brighter personality seen both in Superman comics, as well as Christopher Reeve's beloved Superman movies. On the flip side, some actually appreciated the more subversive take on the DC hero, namely as the remainder of Snyder's planned Justice League trilogy would have helped evolve Cavill's Superman towards the persona audiences are more familiar with.

Cavill himself has opened up about his hopes to see a far more inspiring Superman in his DCU future, believing there to be "something extraordinarily special" about the hero and wanting audiences to feel that they can "leave the cinema and feel like they can fly." With how dedicated he's remained to the character since bringing him to life in Man of Steel, even when his return seemed uncertain, fans have remained just as passionate for Cavill's incarnation of the character, frequently calling for his return, alongside Snyder. Though the latter seems unlikely to come to fruition, and the SDCC rumors failed to be true, Cavill's return in Black Adam ultimately proved patience can be worth it.

What will be interesting to see is where Cavill's Superman will return next in the DCU following his Black Adam cameo. Though Dwayne Johnson has teased plans for a face-off between the two characters, he has noted it won't happen right away, and with reports swirling of Warner Bros. actively looking for Man of Steel 2 writers, it could be some time before Cavill's Superman could pop back up on screen. Regardless of where he shows up, audiences can at least take comfort known Cavill's future as Superman is safe and sound.
