The famous scene in Superman: The Movie, in which its titular Kryptonian takes Lois Lane flying throughout Metropolis, has been recreated by Funko. While we may live in the golden age of comic book movies, Richard Donner’s Superman set the standard for superhero blockbusters back in 1978, receiving critical and commercial acclaim. As the series’ first installment, Superman features Clark Kent’s (Christopher Reeve) origin story and introduction to journalist Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) at the Daily Planet.

Superman’s tagline, “you’ll believe a man can fly,” is perhaps epitomized in a scene where Superman goes to Lois’ apartment for an exclusive interview partway through the film. At the end of said interview, Superman decides to take Lois for a nighttime flight (in her nightgown)—which leads to the iconic line: “You’ve got me. Who’s got you?” The resulting sequence sees the Man of Steel hold Lois’ one hand as they fly through Metropolis... until he drops her momentarily. A contemporary superhero movie would’ve likely produced a less magical, more “realistic” sequence.

Funko recently released a pair of Pop! figures inspired by the flying scene in Superman. The figures of Superman and Lois come packaged together and, while they are exclusive to the UK retailer Zavvi, do ship internationally. Fans can pre-order them here before they release in March. Donner’s Superman spawned three sequels. The more comedic 1980 movie Superman II received universal praise and is considered by some to be even better than the original. However, its successors declined in quality and arguably contributed to much of the camp seen in the previous century’s comic book movies. Since then, Superman, Lois, and their depiction of flight have undergone quite the evolution onscreen. After several failed attempts at resurrecting the franchise, 2006’s Superman Returns received favorable reviews from critics for taking its cue from the originals. However, the film bombed at the box office. It wasn’t until Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013) starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams that Superman and Lois took flight at the box office.

In the wake of 2017’s “Josstice League,” Snyder’s Justice League, and the controversy surrounding Warner Bros./DC Films’ DC Extended Universe, the future of Superman remains uncertain. Man of Steel 2 is likely not in the cards despite fan campaigns for the studio to green light it. Instead, the focus is on a J.J. Abrams-produced reboot starring a black Superman and a Michael B. Jordan-produced series featuring Val Zod on HBO Max. Suffice to say, there’s no telling when and how Superman and his beau take to the skies next. Regardless, as is the case with everything pop culture, there’s sure to be plenty of Superman-inspired Funko Pops on the horizon.
