Following the official renewal for Superman & Lois season 3, multiple cast members are celebrating the thrilling news. As the Arrowverse has existed for a decade as of this October, The CW has adapted multiple iconic DC heroes and villains from panel to screen. One of the latest additions to the line-up is Superman & Lois, featuring Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch as the titular characters. After having guest-starred on Supergirl and in past Arrowverse crossovers, the duo got their own spinoff that focuses on their family life. It didn't take long for the DC drama to become one of the most well-received shows in the Arrowverse franchise.
While Superman & Lois has become a smashing success for The CW, fans had to wait for a little longer this year to hear about a renewal. In past years, The CW usually hand out renewals to most of their shows in January/February. This allowed the writers of the respective series to get more time to plan out the following season. However, 2022 became a different story due to the news that broke out that WarnerMedia and Paramount were putting The CW up for sale. That alone delayed the network from deciding what was getting canceled or renewed for the 2022-2023 TV season.
As Superman & Lois season 2 is getting closer to its end, The CW officially gave the Arrowverse drama a season 3 pick-up this week. While it's unclear if it will premiere this fall or is slated for midseason in 2023, it was exciting to learn the show's future. Despite the potential sale of The CW causing the delay, Superman & Lois was never really at any risk of not getting a third season. Given its critical reception and the massive popularity of the Superman franchise in general, it would have been a true shock if the series had somehow been axed. Per The CW, Superman & Lois is one of the many important properties for the network, especially for their digital strategy, with the world of streaming getting constantly bigger. Superman & Lois season 3 wasn't the only Arrowverse drama to get another year at the network as The Flash season 9 officially got the greenlight.
Given that there are six episodes left of Superman & Lois season 2, details on season 3 won't be out for quite some time. However, what will hopefully be part of the third season is some bigger ties to the overall Arrowverse. While Superman & Lois is based on the same Earth as the other shows, the connectivity has been very limited. Depending on how tight the COVID-19 health guidelines are for production these days, there will ideally be opportunities for Superman and his family to interact with other heroes in the franchise. As Superman & Lois season 2 gets closer to its season finale, viewers will soon get some ideas of what could be in store for the third season.
