Superman & Lois season 2 will feature several villains, according to the showrunner. Based on the iconic DC Comics couple, with Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch stepping into the lead roles, the Arrowverse series premiered back in February. It began with the titular characters returning to Smallville with their two teenage sons Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Jonathan (Jordan Elsass). And, as episodes progress, the duo quickly realizes how difficult it is to maintain a normal family life when their father is the Man of Steel. So far, the adaptation has been a hit – with many praising the fact that The CW offers a fresh spin on a classic hero.

Superman & Lois season 1 included plenty of action and twists. And, along with a focus on Morgan Edge (Adam Raynor) as the main antagonist, the Arrowverse series also brought in other baddies and baddies-turned-reluctant allies. It’s an approach that will continue into the show’s second installment. But, in a significant way, as revealed by showrunner Todd Helbing, the upcoming episodes will see a shift.

Speaking with SFX Magazine to promote Superman & Lois season 2, which will kick off January 11 on The CW, Helbing teased that the trend of multiple villains will continue. He noted that though the baddies won’t be working together, they do hand off to one another. He added that one of the antagonists will be focused on Superman, while the other will be a “Lois villain.” Helbing concluded by saying that these villains, unlike those of the first season, will require even more strength to get rid of. You can read Helbing’s quote, via GamesRadar, below.

“There are multiple villains, really. Both villains affect Clark and Lois personally. We start out with one villain that is really more Superman, while setting up the Lois villain. They are not working together, but they hand off in a cool way this season. One of them comes to the forefront and, in a lot of ways, is more powerful than the other one. It will take the whole team, in a different way than last year, to stop this person.”

Fans have been speculating about the antagonist of Superman & Lois season 2 ever since it was announced that Ian Bohen had been cast in the recurring role of Lt. Mitch Anderson. Bohen worked with Hoechlin on Teen Wolf. And, on that show, their characters Peter and Derek occasionally opposed each other. Audiences have wondered whether the same will be true when the two actors reunite in the Arrowverse. Or if, as it’s hinted in the trailer for Superman & Lois season 2, Anderson is a stand-in for the villainous actions of the U.S. government.

In any case, the hit DC adaptation will look to continue the elements that worked in its initial batch of episodes. A big part of that, and perhaps the biggest, was that Lois was never sidelined and she was never just a damsel in need of rescuing. On the contrary, for much of season 1, it was Lois that stood up to Morgan Edge and voiced her doubts about him. That eventually turned dangerous. And, from the sounds of things, the rogues of Superman & Lois season 2 will be even worse.
