Thanks to an early renewal, audiences can expect Superman & Lois to return for season 2; here's every update for the Arrowverse series, including release date, cast, and story details. Superman & Lois premiered on February 23, 2021, and expanded the CW DC TV franchise into the iconic small-town setting of Smallville. The show was instantly a critical success and is consistently one of the Arrowverse's most-watched programs — despite an admittedly disruptive release schedule.

Superman & Lois is a departure from the typical Man of Steel adaptation; rather than depict Clark Kent's origins, the show focuses on a mature stage in the hero's life. The basic premise is that Clark and Lois move back to Smallville with their two twin teenage boys after Jordan displays evidence of Kryptonian powers. Season 1 of the Arrowverse series saw the family become entangled in a plot involving Morgan Edge, who revealed himself to also be a Kryptonian — but with much more sinister motivations than Superman.

Likely thanks to a strong critical reception, CW renewed Superman & Lois for season 2 in early March — after airing just a single episode! Although 2020-2021 was an unusual year for television, thanks to the production delays caused by COVID-19, audiences can (hopefully) look forward to a more regular broadcast season for 2021-2022. Here's where Superman & Lois season 2 will fit in.

The hit series Superman & Lois has a set release date. The CW announced on November 5, 2021 that Superman & Lois season 2 premieres Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Presumably, the show will follow a similar release schedule as the previous year; however, the number of episodes comprising season 2 is unclear (season 1 was limited to 15 — much shorter than a typical Arrowverse season). Not much is known about the series at this point, but Elizabeth Tulloch (who plays Lois Lane) did tweet the cover of the first episode's script. Superman & Lois season 2, episode 1 is titled "What Lies Beneath," and is directed by Gregory Smith, who worked on other Arrowverse shows in the past, including directing several episodes from Superman & Lois season 1.

The cast in Superman & Lois season 2 will likely be essentially the same as season 1 (with some obvious exceptions); however, Sofia Hasmik was promoted to a series regular for the next installment, so likely Chrissy Beppo will play a much larger role in the show going forward — which makes sense since she and Lois will be business partners. The surprise arrival of John Henry Irons' daughter Natalie suggests that she will be a major part of the season 2 plot.

There have been a few casting updates on the series revealing new characters who will be joining Superman & Lois for season 2. In October 2021, THR reported that Jenna Dewan is reprising her Supergirl role as Lucy Lane for Superman & Lois season 2. Also, Tyler Hoechlin may once again share the screen with fellow Teen Wolf alum Ian Bohen, who was cast for a recurring role on Superman & Lois for season 2. Bohen will be playing Lt. Mitch Anderson, a military man from the Department of Defense who doesn't like the Man of Steel operating outside of the chain of command.

Although the plot details about Superman & Lois season 2 are currently slim, audiences can expect the next installment to continue from the season 1 finale. There have been some other clues about Superman & Lois season 2: A Central City reference in episode 14 hinted that Superman & Lois season 2 may feature a Flash villain, and Supergirl fans are no doubt wondering if any other characters (beside Lucy) will show up in Smallville. The casting of Ian Bohen also suggests that Superman & Lois season 2 will continue to see the Kent family clashing with the DOD.
