A new behind-the-scenes photo from season 2 of Superman & Lois reveals Tyler Hoechlin’s latest Superman suit. Hoechlin, who came to prominence playing Derek Hale in MTV’s Teen Wolf series, was first cast as the Man of Steel in the second season of Supergirl, a role which he would also reprise for the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. In October 2019, it was announced that Hoechlin and his Supergirl co-star Elizabeth Tulloch would be headlining a pilot episode for their own spin-off series, Superman & Lois, and the first season was officially ordered in January the following year.

Following the story of Clark Kent’s and Lois Lane’s family, who return to Clark’s hometown of Smallville following his mother’s death, the series introduces Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin as the couple’s teenaged sons, Jonathon and Jordan Kent. Following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, changes to the timeline resulted in Lois and Clark having twins some twelve years earlier than their child, which is mentioned in Supergirl. Praised by fans and critics alike as one of the strongest entries in the ever-growing CW Arrowverse, the second season was announced just weeks after the pilot episode made its debut earlier this year.

Most recently, director Amy Jo Johnson, who just finished work on the sophomore season’s sixth episode, took to Instagram to share a photo of herself with Hoechlin in a brand-new super suit. While the changes to Superman’s latest look are minimal, keen-eyed fans will be the first to take note of his more comic-accurate boots, which now feature a distinctive V-shaped top. Check out Johnson's original post below:

Hoechlin’s Superman isn’t the only Arrowverse hero to get himself a fresh new pair of boots, with Grant Gustin’s Flash also receiving a footwear upgrade to his comic-accurate golden boots. While Hoechlin’s costume changes are nowhere near as dramatic as Gustin’s, it does continue the series’ trend to show the Superman suit continuing to evolve over the years. Not only did the series provide Hoechlin with a distinctly different suit to that he wore in Supergirl, but the pilot episode also featured his very first suit in a nod to the Max Fleischer Superman cartoon from the 1940s.

Of course, the Arrowverse itself is well known for providing its heroes with updated costumes throughout their shows. Even Clark’s cousin Kara got to reap the benefits of a costume change in Supergirl season 5 by ditching her trademark red skirt and trading it in for pants instead. Fans will get a chance to get a better look at Clark’s new threads when Superman & Lois returns to screens in January 2022.
