Warning: Spoilers for Superman & Lois season 2, episode 2.

Superman & Lois season 2 has shown a new similarity Tyler Hoechlin's Man of Steel has with Henry Cavill's Superman. Hoechlin first debuted as Superman in a recurring role on Supergirl, and later appeared in the mini-series Crisis On Infinite Earths. Hoechlin would eventually headline his own Arrowverse series Superman & Lois, which debuted in early 2021.

It didn't take long for many to notice that Superman & Lois was stylistically quite similar to 2013's Man of Steel. The show has consistently presented Clark Kent with new challenges as both a hero and a father. In Man of Steel, Henry Cavill's Superman also faced his own struggles in revealing himself to the world. Althogether, Man of Steel and Superman & Lois share an approach of telling very humanized stories about Superman. The latter has also revealed a key character trait both Hoechlin and Cavill's versions share.

In Superman & Lois season 2', episode 2, Kal-El and his son Jordan (Alex Garfin) free Tal-Rho (Adam Rayner) and travel to his fortress to understand Superman's recent headache-induing visions. When one kicks in at the fortress and incapacities Superman, Tal-Rho reveals he still has his Kryptonian powers and attacks Jordan. Superman manages to regain his equilibrium, pinning Tal-Rho to a wall and punching him repeatedly in fury while shouting "Don't you ever touch him!"  While the hologram of Superman's mother Lara Lor-Van (Mariana Klaveno) manages to calm him down, this moment is strikingly similar to one in Man of Steel.

Superman punching General Zod through the fields in Man Of Steel (2013)

In this scene, Michael Shannon's General Zod and his Kryptonian soldiers confront Martha Kent (Diane Lane) for the location of the Kryptonian codex. Superman intervenes and flies off with Zod, punching him in anger while shouting "You think you can threaten my mother?!" In both scenes, the framing of Superman punching his opponent is quite similar. Superman & Lois' version very much homages Man of Steel's on the surface, but it also shows that both Hoechlin and Cavill's Supermen have a secondary form of Kryptonite.

While Superman is a protector of all humanity, Man of Steel showed that a direct threat to Martha could greatly infuriate Clark Kent. This was seen again in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice when Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) kidnapped Martha, Superman angrily demanding "Where is she?!" while barely able to keep his heat vision held back. While Superman has never had anger issues, the breaking point of Cavill's version was seeing his loved ones placed in danger.

Superman & Lois shows that Hoechlin's Kal-El has the same trigger to his own anger. Like Cavill's Superman, Hoechlin's version's mission is to defend the entire planet, as he makes clear to military operatives annoyed he won't work directly for the U.S. government. Still, attacks on his family is the point where Hoechlin's Superman loses his cool, cheerful demeanor and unleashes all the strength he's kept in check. Superman & Lois clearly takes a lot of inspiration from Man of Steel. As a byproduct of that is that the show also establishes that Tyler Hoechlin's Kryptonian hero, like Henry Cavill's, has the same point for where he loses his temper.
