The original Superman, Kal-El, finally returns to Earth to team up with his son and fellow Superman, Jon Kent, in a six-part crossover this fall from DC Comics. After fighting Mongul and his oppressive forces on Warworld, Superman will return home to Metropolis and a battle closer to home. The crossover, called "Kal-El Returns," will take place over six issues in the pages of Action Comics and Superman: Son of Kal-El from writers Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Tom Taylor, with artists to be announced.

Clark Kent—also known by his Kryptonian name, Kal-El—has been fighting the tyrannical Mongul on Warworld for many months now, in a battle his son Jon Kent feared would be Superman's last. Superman infiltrated Warworld with a team of heroes and anti-heroes known as the Authority, and though they've been living and fighting among Warworld's oppressed classes, soon their mission will come to a close. Meanwhile, Jon Kent has taken over his father's role as the new Superman of Earth, where Jon has been fighting his own battles, including the dictatorial president of Gamorra, Henry Bendix, and coming out as bisexual.

It's been both a galactic and a personally-trying year for both Supermen, but soon they will be reunited in a six-part crossover, "Kal-El Returns." The Warworld saga will conclude in the one-shot Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1 by by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Brandon Peterson, and Will Conrad. The issue will be available on August 30. “Superman: Warworld Apocalypse is everything we’ve been building to with the Warworld Saga, with the final battle between Superman and Mongul, between the Authority and the Unmade, and the long-awaited reveal of the real mastermind in the shadows,” says Johnson in a statement from DC Comics. “There are some frankly shocking moments in this issue, and some huge reveals that will have long-lasting repercussions in the DC Universe.

Kal-El then makes his way back to earth in Action Comics #1047, which Johnson promises will be a "new era" for Superman and the Super-Family. “After the events of the Warworld saga, Superman has returned to Earth with new allies but Lex Luthor has his own plans for Metropolis after he sees a great opportunity in the fall of Warworld. Plans that involve the return of one of Superman’s most classic villains, Metallo.” The "Kal-El Returns" crossover continues in Action Comics #1048-1049 and Superman: Son of Kal-El #16-18.

Superman and his son, Jon Kent, have been separated for quite some time, with Jon believing he might truly lose his father to Warworld. With Clark Kent's return to Earth, fans will see the two heroes team up for the first time not as Superman and Superboy, but Superman and Superman. The Super-Family might be stronger together, but the end of the Warworld saga and the beginning of "Kal-El Returns" promises major upheavals across the Superman line and the DC Universe as a whole. Not only is Johnson promising to "refresh" Metallo upon Kal-El's return to Earth, but the Superman: Warworld Apocolypse one-shot will see "empires fall and rise and the fourth world [...] reborn." Clark Kent might be coming home to his son Jon and their family, but greater threats—perhaps even Darkseid himself—seem to be looming large on the horizon.

After departing Earth seemingly for good, the original Superman is returning home to reunite with his son and fellow Superman, Jon Kent. Though both Supermen have been fighting their own battles, big and small, as individuals, fans should look forward to a heartwarming reunion as the two Kents prepare for the even bigger threats that they will face in the new era of their Super-Family. Check out Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1 available this August from DC Comics, as well as the "Kal-El Returns" crossover this fall.
