Warning: includes a preview for Superman: Son of Kal-El #1!

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #1, Jonathan Kent's birth is being retconned and retold with a new origin. In the new series, Jonathan will be taking on the mantle of Superman. This moment has been building up for some time, as DC has constantly shined the spotlight on Superman's son. Jonathan has shown Superman that he is ready to follow in his footsteps. Clark Kent has been constantly impressed with his son's heroic actions and ability to control his new powers in a way that even Clark can't do.

Superboy, created by Dan Jurgens, first appeared in Convergence: Superman #2 in 2015. During the Convergence crossover event, Jonathan was born in the midst of a multiversal cataclysm. Both his parents, Superman and Lois Lane, were abducted and taken to a mysterious planet called Telos. There, they were forced to fight against other heroes from around the multiverse after nine months of isolation in each timeline's domed cities. However, as Lois' due date came close, Lois was kidnapped by Flashpoint Superman. Ultimately, Superman rescued Lois and she delivered Jonathan inside the Batcave.

Now, in Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 by Tom Taylor, John Timms, and Gabe Eltaeb, Superboy's origin story is receiving a major update. In an exclusive preview from CBR, DC Comics has revealed the first look at the future of Superman's birth. The preview pages below showcase Jonathan Kent's birth in a brand new way. In a flashback, Superman teams up with Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter as they fight a new cosmic threat. The three Justice League members are surrounded by a swarm of highly advanced space ships firing lasers at them. The stakes are high as Superman rushes to get back to the Fortress where Batman and Wonder Woman look after a very pregnant Lois Lane.

Somehow, Superman and his team are able to defeat the Justice League's newest threat from outer space. It's likely that Martian Manhunter will deliver the final blow that wipes out the threat, which readers can infer with him breaking out of Green Lantern's force field. Superman then proceeds to descend down to the Fortress of Solitude where he is greeted by Batman. Remarkably, Batman isn't the glooming person that he normally is as he shakes Superman's hand with a smile on his face. Clark enters the Fortress and finds Lois cradling baby Jonathan in her arms. Jonathan's new birth origin has similar attributes to his original one, although the crisis event and his location of birth have been changed.

DC Comics is no stranger from retconning continuity. Even their most famous comic event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, was designed to reboot their entire comic slate. Infinite Frontier acts more like a soft reboot, allowing leeway for small changes in continuity. However, the future Superman's birth seems to be the biggest retcon of DC's new era. DC is refashioning Jonathan Kent's origin to be more in line with Infinite Frontier's events as the publisher prepares to descend into a new era of Superman comics.
