Despite reports of his appearing at the event, Superman fans have been left devastated that Henry Cavill didn't announce his return at San Diego Comic-Con. The British actor first donned the iconic hero mantle with Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's reboot of the Superman film franchise and the first installment in Warner Bros' DC Extended Universe. Cavill would carry the role through its initial sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the crossover epic Justice League, as well as Snyder's alternate cut released on HBO Max last year.

Snyder's approach to adapting Superman for the DCEU has been met with polarized reviews for nearly a decade, with some believing he took too dark an approach in contrast with the character's bright personality in the comics, with comparisons made to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, especially since the filmmaker produced and developed the story for Man of Steel. Despite the mixed reception to the depiction, Cavill has received generally positive reviews for his performance as the iconic hero, especially in Zack Snyder's Justice League, which saw him begin to transition towards the personality fans knew and love. With the DCEU having largely moved on from its early films, audiences have been left wondering if Cavill would return and saw a seemingly disappointed update this weekend.

Anticipation had been high for the Warner Bros. SDCC panel since a report came out indicating that Cavill would be appearing to announce his Superman return. Though only considered a rumor at the time, those who fell in love with the DCEU's Man of Steel were eager to learn of how he could come back to fold after five years of being absent from the screen. Some took to speculating a confirmation of his making a cameo in The Flash or Black Adam while others remained hopeful of a solo film announcement for Cavill's Superman.

Though Superman fans may be devastated that Cavill didn't announce his DCEU return at SDCC, it doesn't mean the door is completely closed for the actor to come back. Dwayne Johnson noted during the panel that a Black Adam and Superman fight is still on the table "depending on who's playing" the Man of Steel and Cavill himself has frequently expressed a desire to make his way back to the big screen as Superman. While audiences continue to hold out hope for a proper announcement of his return, they can revisit Cavill's DCEU Superman tenure with Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and all versions of Justice League streaming on HBO Max.
