Henry Cavill reportedly won’t be returning as Superman in The Flash or any other upcoming DCEU projects. Cavill first made his debut as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, kicking off the official DCEU in the Zack Snyder-directed film. The movie proved controversial for longtime fans of the character, some of whom felt it did not stay true to the essence of the beloved hero. Man of Steel went on to gross $668 million in what was considered a modest disappointment for the fledgling franchise.

Since then, Cavill has appeared a few more DCEU films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, both of which were critical flops. With the DCEU in disarray, the future of the franchise was uncertain, even as Warner Bros. released hits like Wonder Woman and Aquaman. With the studio abandoning the SnyderVerse, the DCEU’s future is even more unclear, even with films like The Flash, Aquaman 2, and an untitled third Wonder Woman movie on the slate.

That future may not include Cavill now, as The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez says on Twitter that Cavill is not slated to appear in any future DCEU projects. Gonzalez responded to an account who claimed that Cavill was indeed going to appear in The Flash, saying that he isn’t going to be in that film and that the actor doesn’t currently have a deal to appear in any other DCEU movies. Gonzalez reiterated this point in another tweet in response to a user asking about Cavill news. Check out the two tweets below:

To some, it will be no surprise to hear that Cavill is no longer playing Superman. His role in the DCEU has long been in question as the franchise has seemed hesitant to greenlight a second solo film based on Cavill’s character or have him cameo in other DCEU films. Additionally, recent casting news has certainly indicated that the franchise may be moving on from Cavill’s iteration of the character. J.J. Abrams is working on a Superman reboot with a Black actor set to play Kal-El while Michael B. Jordan also has a miniseries in the works at HBO Max centered around Val-Zod.

Additionally, Sasha Calle has been cast as Supergirl in The Flash, adding yet another Kryptonian to the growing slate of them in various DC projects. All of this certainly seems to indicate that, as part of the SnyderVerse, it may be time to say goodbye to Cavill's Superman. With Cavill having other projects that he's just as passionate about, including Netflix's The Witcher series, it could be for the best, for both the DCEU and Cavill, as they look to the future.
