Superman’s iconic blue costume is severely damaged at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, yet the suit reappears later in the DCEU, fully repaired. Superman’s suit is shown to be about as durable as Superman himself, but both are nevertheless impaled by Doomsday. Following Superman’s resurrection, he temporarily dons a black regenerative version of his suit, which helps him return to full strength, though Zack Snyder’s Justice League and other DCEU films make it clear that the original blue suit has been repaired.

Superman’s DCEU suit is Kryptonian in origin and is therefore nearly indestructible. As such, despite Krypton’s destruction, the suit can be repaired or even replaced thanks to technology found within Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. This allows the DCEU films to have Superman’s suit sustain damage in extreme scenarios while explaining how such a durable costume can be repaired later.

Superman's Fortress of Solitude Can Fix Kryptonian Suits

As shown in Man of Steel, the iconic location is a Kryptonian scout ship in the DCEU. This means it contains the necessary technology to repair and replace Superman’s suit if need be, as well as provide him with other specialized equipment, such as the black regenerative suit. The DCEU’s Fortress of Solitude, aka Scout Ship 0344, contains a multitude of Kryptonian technologies, including robot crew members and a genesis chamber that Lex Luthor used to create Doomsday in Batman V Superman.

As shown in Justice League, the ship contains various battle armors and space suits, as well as a fabricator. Considering how durable Superman’s suit is, the fabricator is possibly the only means of repairing the Kryptonian outfit. While it is not shown repairing the suit, the fact that Superman’s costume no longer has a massive hole in its chest and cape in its later DCEU appearances shows that the fabrication was used to repair it.

How Indestructible Are Superman's Suits?

Superman’s costume has varying origins in DC’s comics and their adaptations, depending on the continuity. In some iterations, the suit is made of a Kryptonian material and is therefore nearly invulnerable. In other timelines, it is a simple cloth suit that is easily damaged but just as easily repaired. The DCEU uses the former explanation, and Superman’s iconic suit endures bullets, explosions, and even a nuclear explosion at various points, remaining unscathed each time. It is only when Doomsday, a creature of Kryptonian origin and strength, impales Superman that the suit finally takes damage.

The DCEU wisely gave Superman a costume as durable as he is but also provides him with a means to repair it, benefitting both the character and the viewers. Costume damage is a simple and effective way of signifying the threat level of a superhero’s enemies, so Doomsday proves how dangerous he is in his final moments by tearing through Superman’s suit and killing Superman himself. After the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Superman eventually returns to full strength and dons his classic blue suit once again, thanks to his Fortress’ fabricator.
