Update: Game Informer executive editor Andrew Reiner has denied the 4chan report via Twitter. The rest of the story below remains in its original form.
According to a rumor on 4chan, 'Batman: Arkham' creators Rocksteady Studios will unveil a Superman game as early as next week. Rocksteady Studios has been mostly quiet since completing their hit Batman: Arkham series of games. However, according to the aforementioned 4chan post, the video game studio is soon set to tackle a game starring DC's resident Man of Steel. The post promises that the game will be unveiled as a cover story in next week's issue of Game Informer magazine, touting the game's "massive" scale and ambition. "You all will be blown away by the details," the anonymous poster promises.
Batman: Arkham Asylum was considered to be a fairly rare case of a successful licensed superhero game, as - with a few other exceptions - other games of its ilk often ended up disappointing fans. With voice talent from Batman: The Animated Series, an original story from Paul Dini and an excellent free-flowing combat system, all those skeptical of the project were proven wrong. Rocksteady followed up Arkham Asylum with the larger, more expansive titles Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight, and shorter virtual reality entry Batman: Arkham VR.
The one game in the series that Rocksteady did not have their hands on was prequel Batman: Arkham Origins; that title was the work of developer WB Games Montreal, who were previously rumored to be working on a Superman game. When that rumored project was reported on over two years ago, a low-quality image of what appeared to be a biography for Superman - which included a character model based on his New 52 appearance - was attached. The recent 4chan post has the same image, but the rumored project has never materialized in the two years that followed.
If this rumor from the somewhat dubious source of a 4chan poster is to believed, then fans should take comfort knowing that such a project is in the good hands of Rocksteady. It is a challenge to think of any good Superman-centered video games, with infamously bad results such as Superman 64, or the Superman Returns video game that had a tornado as the final boss. The Man of Steel certainly has a different power set than the stealth and gadget-happy Dark Knight, but Rocksteady has already proven itself to be able to deliver a quality superhero-based product.
The video game community has every right to be skeptical about internet rumors such as this one, but real and authentic leaks have come from 4chan in the past. In the meantime, we'll have to wait for next week's issue of Game Informer, and hope that the long and unlikely dream of a good Superman video game will finally be achieved.
