Warning: spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1033!

Action Comics is bringing back Superman's forgotten love of gadgets, as Lois Lane uses the Kryptonian's trophies to keep up with a family full of metahumans and their alien enemies. While Superman is out trying to prevent an all-out war between Atlantis and America, the Fortress of Solitude is broken into. The young Kryptonian refugee Thao-La is attacked by a group of Mongul's Warzoons, who give her a brutal and intimidating message from their boss. However, unknown to the Warzoons, Thao-La isn't alone in the Fortress, and Lois storms in guns blazing to protect her new ally.

Over the years, Superman has collected many commemorative items that are stored away in the Fortress of Solitude. These items, in the hands of villains, could be deadly - hence why he stores them in the middle of nowhere. However, there is also a nostalgic element to him keeping his enemy's weapons rather than destroying them. They serve as a reminder of some of his greatest battles, and technically constitute one of the most varied and powerful armories in the DC Universe.

In Action Comics #1033 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Daniel Sampere, and Adriano Lucas, Lois Lane saves Thao-La from the Warzoons using an energy gun that makes her as formidable as any tech-based superhero. This is a weapon that fans have not seen before, simply because Superman has no use for weapons, as he is naturally more powerful than anything man-made. Superman's classic stories featured plenty of outlandish gadgets, which sometimes return in ambitious series like Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly's All-Star Superman, but most creators ignore Clark's fascinating sci-fi collection since it's rare he needs tech to save the day. But with the recent advanced-VR tour of Kandor and this energy gun, Lois Lane is proving the perfect way for Action Comics to show off Superman's gadgets once again.

Of course, there have been other times when Superman's allies have got to explore his catalog of unused trophies. Notably, in World's Finest #175, Commissioner Gordon and Robin are stunned at Superman's gadgets and the power that they hold. Jimmy Olsen is seen using "an anti-grav feather cloak" which grants humans the ability to fly. Among his collection, Superman has an "intelligence expander from the Cerebron galaxy," while All-Star Superman reveals he possesses a telepathic dictation device, an artificial universe used to study what Earth would be like without him (implied to be the reader's reality), a time telescope, and a futuristic sewing machine with a diamond-tipped needle to work with indestructible thread. In short, Superman's trophies and inventions are incredibly fun and imaginative, but unlike the gadget-obsessed Batman, he rarely gets an opportunity to show them off. Thankfully, as shown in Action Comics #1033, Lois is more than willing to raid the armory when needed.

Wielding Superman's gadgets puts Lois - a hero for sure, but also a normal human - on the level of the Warzoons, while Superman's advanced VR set allowed her to effectively shrink down and travel around in the Bottle City of Kandor. Lois Lane is basically using this tech to accomplish superhuman feats, and as her son Jon takes on his father's mantle, Thao-La joins the Kent family, and DC hints Clark will be forced to leave the planet, hopefully she'll keep drawing on Superman's trophies to overcome seemingly impossible situations.
