Warning: contains spoilers for World of Krypton #3!

DC's Superman is well-known for having two sets of parents, but one of those sets is experience a massive retcon that will change the way readers see the Man of Steel forever. The early days of Krypton, Superman's home planet, are largely shrouded in mystery, and writers put their individual spin on the world whenever they're given the chance. But World of Krypton #3 showcases an all-new Krypton and an all-new Jor-El, Superman's biological father.

In classic Superman lore, the planet Krypton explodes mere moments after Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van launch an infant Superman to safety in a prototype rocket. The reasons for Krypton's destruction vary between the many continuities of the DC multiverse: sometimes the planet explodes due to an unstable core, caused by dangerous energy-harvesting techniques on the part of the Kryptonian people. Jor-El is usually the sole voice of reason among the Kryptonians, desperately attempting to warn his people about the dangers below - and he's ignored and/or ridiculed in nearly every continuity.

Yet in a meeting with the science council in World of Krypton #3, the council shocking listens to Jor-El. Surprisingly, when Jor-El presents his findings regarding Krypton's highly unstable core, the council not only believes his science in the first place but heeds his warnings as well. This is quite the paradigm shift from constantly portraying the entire Kryptonian council as dismissive toward anything Jor-El has to say.

Superman and his destroyed home world Krypton

That's not to say that Jor-El isn't met with any opposition, however. He announces to the council that the damage caused to the core is irreparable, and the priority now is to maintain what stability remains. He proposes using massive energy shields to prevent the core from further destabilizing, to which one of the council members notes the energy required to maintain the shields. "How do we produce this much and meet our current societal demands?" they ask, to which Jor-El can only respond "We can't...saving Krypton will require the effort of every one of her citizens. Sacrifices will have to be made."

This unfortunately leaves the door open for the council to eventually rebel against Jor-El's methods to preserve the environment. However, for the time being, seeing the council listen to Jor-El and treat him with respect means he is no longer the social pariah seen in the Silver and Bronze Ages. Superman's father now has the respect he deserves - unfortunately, nothing can keep Krypton from fated destruction.
