According to insiders in a new report, Henry Cavill's Superman replacement search began in 2018. 2022 was an emotional rollercoaster of a year for Warner Bros. Discovery and their DC Universe properties. While Black Adam was eying a potential shift in a new direction for the DCU, things turned south. With a struggling box office performance, Black Adam isn't going forward as a franchise. As James Gunn and Peter Safran are leading DC Studios, a reboot is seemingly on the way.

One of the 2022 fallouts was the short return of Cavill as Superman in the DCU after making a cameo in Black Adam. The road to getting Cavill back as the Man of Steel was more than dramatic. A new report from Variety has added more fuel to it, revealing that former Warner Bros. head Tobey Emmerich has wanted a new Superman ever since 2018. The trade reports that Emmerich supposedly wanted anyone but Cavill in the iconic red-and-blue tights. Emmerich nor anyone at Warner Bros. Discovery has commented on the story at the time of publishing.

What's Next For Superman In TV & Film

Superman flies above Metropolis in art by Alex Ross.

While Cavill may be done as Superman in the DCU, the last son of Krypton has many live-action and animated adventures coming up. After Cavill was confirmed to be finished as the DCU's Superman, Gunn revealed that he is actually writing a new move based on the DC icon. Gunn's project will center on a younger Clark Kent and not be an origin story for Superman but rather an earlier part in his life. It's unclear at this point if Gunn will direct the reboot himself or if a different filmmaker will be tapped.

On the small screen, The CW still has the Arrowverse drama Superman & Lois, which will be back for season 3. The network recently announced that the DC TV series would premiere on Tuesday, March 14, with Gotham Knights launching right after Superman & Lois. It's unclear if this will be the final season for Superman & Lois, given the unclear future of the Arrowverse on The CW. While no details have emerged as of late, Michael B. Jordan is developing a Val-Zod series for HBO Max, which he will produce. While the project has tapped writers, it remains to be seen if Jordan will star in the series, should it move forward on the platform. Val-Zod would focus on an alternative take on Superman from another universe.

A new cartoon, My Adventures with Superman, is still on its way after getting a pick-up for two seasons. No word has come out yet on when My Adventures of Superman is expected to premiere on Cartoon Network and HBO Max. Despite Gunn's DCU project, a Black Superman movie is also in the works and still going forward despite the DC Studios shake-up. J.J. Abrams is executive producing the film, which was penned by Ta-Nehisi Coates, with no director locked in yet. With Gunn's Superman movie being worked on, time will tell what happens to the other projects.
