New DC Studios head, writer and director James Gunn, recently stated that Superman is still a major priority going forward. Following WarnerMedia and Discover, Inc.'s merger in April, DC Films underwent a major restructuring that resulted in the cancelation of several major projects, including the nearly completed Batgirl film, which would have seen Michael Keaton return as Batman. With former CEO Walter Hamada departing in October, Gunn and Peter Safran were hired in his place and set in motion their plans to rebrand their superhero franchises.Gunn recently took to social media to assure his followers that DC Studios still sees Superman as a major priority going forward. Following Henry Cavill's surprise cameo as Superman in a Black Adam post-credits scene, Man of Steel 2 was announced in development. However, it was later revealed that the film was never greenlit following a rejected pitch. With Gunn's latest tweet, it appears that the Last Son of Krypton may still return in some fashion in the future. Check out Gunn's post below:

Why Henry Cavill Needs To Be The DCU's Superman

Henry Cavill in Man Of Steel in field of skulls

Although Cavill had cultivated a solid career in film and television with roles in The Count of Monte Cristo, Stardust, and The Tudors, his role as Clark Kent in the Man of Steel propelled him into stardom. Despite some criticism regarding the casting choice due to his English nationality, Cavill proved that he was more than a physique. The actor provided the emotional weight needed to realize Zack Snyder's conflicted version of the iconic DC Comics character.

Gunn and Safran face an enormous challenge as they attempt to rebrand the DCU into a more cohesive shared universe akin to what Kevin Feige has done with Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recasting Superman would likely draw swift backlash due to the actor's immense popularity, as seen with Cavill's controversial departure from Netflix's The Witcher series. Despite the mixed reception from the DCU's Snyder-era, audiences clearly approved of Cavill's performance as the Man of Steel, and going forward without him would be a detriment to the DCU's future.

With The Flash film set to land in theaters June 16, 2023, the DCU has an opportunity to reboot the main continuity of the shared universe. Speculation is high for the upcoming film, with many believing that the movie would use the Flashpoint comic book arc as its premise. This would allow the franchise to reset its storylines but still retain its prominent actors, to include Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, and Cavill. Barring another announcement from DC Studios, Superman fans must be patient to see if Cavill will reprise his role as the Man of Steel one more time.
