Superman Prepares Supergirl For His Biggest Twist in Years

With Superman revealing his secret identity to the world this December, he's preparing his family for the change - Supergirl most of all.

Superman Supergirl and Krypto

Warning: Minor SPOILERS for Superman #17

Strange days are ahead for the DC Universe, with fans everywhere preparing for the moment Superman reveals his secret identity to the world. The fateful day arrives this December, but in advance of that point of no return, fans are being given a sneak peek at the first superhero to learn of the Man of Steel's intentions. And there is no telling how Supergirl is going to take it.

The very idea of Superman losing his Clark Kent disguise, for good, is hard to look beyond for many longtime fans. For his part, writer Brian Michael Bendis is fighting back the assumptions, telling fans that Superman exposing Clark Kent isn't what they think. Still, the news will make waves big enough to convince at least one DC villain to turn good. But even that is easier to predict than how Kara Zor-El will support or oppose the move. Let alone Superman's son, Jonathan.

Now the first look at Superman giving Supergirl the news can be found below, courtesy of The Washington Post. It appears to be the final page of Superman #17, so the full scene and resolution will have to wait until the revealing issue itself. But in case anyone was concerned Clark wasn't taking this seriously enough, the pained expression should clear things up:

Along with this look at Superman preparing Supergirl for such a massive twist (basically outing her as Clark Kent's cousin, too) comes yet another reassurance from Bendis that Clark Kent's days aren't over. Yes, his working life is going to get a lot more complicated. But as Bendis explains, DC was on board with this colossal shift in the Superman status quo:

I get why people would immediately think... that Clark Kent just goes away. Clark is a huge part of who [Superman] is. It’s who he grew up as. He’s not giving it up. He’s sharing it with people... I have to be careful with my wording, but, you know, this is Warner Bros., and they don’t do things willy-nilly and this was approved. They said, ‘Go for it. We see what you’re doing. We get it.’ It takes [Superman] into a place we would like to take him.

Fans will have to wait and see for themselves how the twist is delivered, and just how much it may change the landscape of the DC Universe. But until then, read on below for the full solicitations details and plot synopsis:
