While Superman is vulnerable to Kryptonite and magic, he has one weakness which makes them both seem cheap in comparison. The Man of Steel’s super-hearing can be used against him when there are certain frequencies or overwhelming sounds that he consequently hears.

Kryptonite was originally introduced into the Superman mythos as a means of stakes. Robbing Superman of his powers, the green meteorite from his home world of Krypton also affects his health. When he is affected by Kryptonite, he’s effectively not Superman anymore. Similarly, exposure to red sun light, which is also native to Krypton, removes his powers and weakens him physically. In contrast, magic has been used against the Man of Steel, proving to override his abilities and get the better of him. All three alternate ways for villains to counteract Superman’s wide range of powers tend to be considered as unoriginal solutions.

When Superman’s super-hearing is turned against him, he is demobilized, but maintains some of his strength. While in his vulnerable state, he is disoriented and can be fought by someone without powers, who might stand a chance. However, it doesn’t prevent him from being Superman. In Superman: Sacrifice, Wonder Woman turns Superman’s super-hearing against him by slamming her hands over his ears. After waiting for her superhero colleague to fall into her trap, she gives him a concussion. The trade paperback was written by Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, and Mark Verheiden, with art by Ed Benes, Karl Kerschl, Tony Daniel, and John Byrne. Batman has attempted a similar move in the past when Superman was mind-controlled by Poison Ivy, utilizing a whistle to lure him into a trap.

Although many writers try to take Superman’s powers out of the equation to give villains, and other heroes, a fair fight, this depiction of his abilities is far more compelling. Superman has been criticized by some comic book readers before due to his abundance of powers. However, Wonder Woman and Batman’s strategies prove that his powers have never been an issue for the stakes of a story.

Instead of relying on meteorite or red sun radiation, more villains and heroes alike should consider more creative methods. Superman’s powers might be a roadblock for someone like Lex Luthor, but with his intellect, he should be able to make his problem into the Man of Steel’s problem. By weaponizing Superman against himself, his enemies can prove they really are on equal footing.
