Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman were once forced to lead the Amazons of Paradise Island against an army of Doomsdays. The three heroes were in disagreement about the training and welfare of the new Supergirl, which was interrupted by a Boom Tube that deposited duplicates of the famous creature responsible for killing Superman. When the call to arms was made, three of DC's most famous and powerful heroes joined in the fight against one of the greatest alien menaces ever created.

In the 2004 Superman/Batman storyline “The Supergirl from Krypton,” an unidentified spacecraft is discovered having landed on Earth by Batman. He discovers it carries a frightened blonde passenger who has powers similar to Superman. After wreaking some havoc in Gotham, she is subdued by kryptonite and brought to the Batcave for analysis, but it is Superman who talks to her and learns she is actually his cousin, Kara Zor-El. Kal shows Kara around Metropolis while Batman remains suspicious that Kara is not who she says she is. While visiting the Superman Memorial, they are attacked. Batman intervenes, and they discover their attackers are Amazons led by fellow Justice League member, Wonder Woman, who holds Kara hostage.

In Superman/Batman #10 by Jeph Loeb, Michael Turner and Peter Steigerwald, Kara is seen training with the Amazons on Paradise Island while Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman watch. Although she does well, Superman is still overprotective of her and annoyed that the attack and kidnapping were coordinated by Wonder Woman and Batman as a test. While Kara  spends time with the Amazons she’s begun to befriend, DC’s Trinity argue over Kara’s welfare and training. Wonder Woman reminds Superman that Kara’s potential makes her a target for their enemies, either to hurt Superman or exploit for their own agenda. And almost on cue, a Boom Tube opens up and deposits Doomsday, the alien juggernaut that is infamously remembered for killing Superman, who was last seen being bartered by ex-President Lex Luthor to Darkseid for aid during the Imperiex War. In a shocking twist, more than one Doomsday appears through the portal as the Amazons prepare for battle. Soon, Superman, Wonder Woman and a battle-axe wielding Batman stand ready to fight not one but an entire army of Doomsdays.

Doomsday demolished the Justice League and left a trail of death and destruction until he seemingly died in his climatic battle with Superman that nearly leveled Metropolis. However, every time Doomsday dies, he is reborn with a greater level of strength which makes him in the possession of Darkseid even more dangerous. The fight between the Doomsdays, Amazons and the heroes present is beautifully illustrated by the late Michael Turner, who shows all three heroes holding their ground while battling one of their world’s greatest threats. When Wonder Woman learns the Doomsdays have no blood, Batman realizes none of them show any higher functions like speech, concluding they are actually clones made from Apokolips’ twisted chief scientist Doctor Bedlam. Unable to replicate Doomsday’s complicated Kryptonian DNA, these Doomsday duplicates not only continue Doctor Bedlam’s love of inflicting fear but also the advanced lengths Apokolips will go to overwhelm their enemies.

Realizing that these enemies are technically not alive Superman tells Diana to pull back the Amazons. He then shows how seriously he takes Doomsday as a threat by incinerating the entire army with an intense blast of heat vision, having already shown a weakness to Batman’s explosive Batarangs. The charred and smoldering corpses remind readers that Superman generally holds back a lot of his true power against many of his enemies, with Doomsday being one of the exceptions. Although Superman tells the nearby Wonder Woman that he likely couldn’t do that again, the fact that he could do it at all is just one of the many awesome moments in this iconic storyline.
