Warning! Spoilers ahead for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1!

In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1Supergirl uses her and Superman's weakness as Kryptonians to her advantage. This issue finds Kara turning twenty one as she celebrates her birthday on an alien planet. The reason that she's there isn't because of a mission, she is there voluntarily as she escapes from the shackles of Earth. But the real reason is that she wants to get drunk and that's why she's travelled across the galaxy to a space bar. Here, she is joined by a new young alien friend named Ruthye who needs Supergirl's services.

Being a Kryptonian on Earth comes with so many advantages that almost every hero and villain at some point have been jealous of their abilities. Under the planet's yellow sun, Kryptonians are gifted incredible amounts of powers as their DNA reacts with the sun's radiation. However, it comes with some downfalls. For instance, it's really hard for Kryptonians to get drunk while on Earth. It's a small hindrance that can be easily overlooked, but as confirmed in this issue, sometimes Kryptonians want to let go like everyone else.

In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, shows the one reason that Supergirl would ever voluntarily go to a planet that orbits a red sun. It's been commonly depicted that Kryptonians are often desperate to avoid stepping foot anywhere near a red sun, as it saps them of their powers and turns them into average people. Supergirl proves her smarts as she utilizes her weakness in a way that Superman has never done: she allows herself to become susceptible to alcohol's effects. Kara reveals why she came after she defeats Ruthye's assailant, who stole her father's sword.

Needing a red sun is something that would've sounded ludicrous before this issue, as Kryptonians hate losing their powers. But Supergirl's actions prove that Kryptonians can get drunk just like anyone else. Also, they are just as susceptible to throwing up, which is evidently a new thing for Supergirl. It's hilarious to see a hero of Supergirl's stature drunk fighting in an alien bar, there's something otherworldly about it. Although drunkenness is usually related to loss of control, Supergirl doesn't fail to defeat her enemy. On the contrary, Supergirl has complete control during the fight as she bests her opponent, proving that even while drunk, Supergirl is a great warrior. It's just funny to see her finally getting drunk, it's quite liberating. Imagine what Superman would be like, drunk fighting Lex Luthor!

The act of getting drunk is distinctly related to humans and with Supergirl having lived a large portion of her life on Earth, it makes sense that she wants to finally be able to drink. She has been surrounded by it and now, being twenty-one, she treats herself to a few too many drinks. Although the issue starts on a light note, the rest of Supergirl's journey is teased to be a medieval-inspired revenge tale as she tracks down Krem, Krypto's killerSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 is available in comic book stores and on digital platforms now.
