A new extended trailer for the midseason premiere of Supergirl has given fans their first live-action glimpse of Brainiac-5. With Kara left comatose after her battle with Reign before the season break, it seems that this particular member of the Legion of Superheroes will make a very important contribution towards bringing the Woman of Steel back to the land of the living.
Having already re-introduced Mon-El (Chris Wood) back to Earth, along with his new bride Imra Ardeen (Amy Jackson), viewers of The CW show have been eager to see who else would be resuscitated from the pods in the buried Legion ship. It was then announced that actor Jesse Rath (Being Human) had been cast in the role of Brainiac-5. The iconic character is an essential member of the Legion of Superheroes, having joined the team to make amends for the crimes committed by his ancestor - the original Brainiac, who is credited with being one of Superman's deadliest foes. His superior intellect marks him as one of the smartest characters in the DC universe, and leads him to invent the famous Legion flight ring, amongst many other gadgets.
In the new promo (which can be seen above), the footage indicates that Supergirl is still unconscious. Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) states that she is trapped inside a 'mind prison', whilst criminals and Reign run rampant through Central City. With the DEO seriously overwhelmed, Winn refers to the 'literal Legion of Superheroes' that they have to aid them, and Brainiac-5 is seen flanking Mon-El and Saturn Girl as they ready for battle. Along with that, Kara is seen to be trapped within her own apartment (presumably the 'prison' which Win refers to), and Brainiac-5 makes a sudden appearance seemingly in the act of trying to wake her conscious mind. It's a neat series of teases that indicates how the premiere episode will introduce the popular character to the current season.
It's not the first time that Supergirl has encountered a Coluan. In Season 1 she fought Indigo (Laura Vandervoort), who is the Arrowverse version of Brainiac-8 and another future descendant of the original Brainiac in the comics. Although Superman is now an important part of Supergirl's universe, that original villain has yet to make an appearance on the show (though he will appear in the Syfy TV series Krypton). Rath's appearance is slightly different than the comics' version, but the actor's previous roles in Defiance and Being Human indicate that he should be able to pull off the character's oddly endearing arrogance and intelligence. There's even been a hint that the character might develop a romantic interest in Kara.
It will be interesting to see how Brainiac-5 will affect the dynamics in the show, and just how he will aid the team in combatting the threat of Reign. It also opens up the possibilities as to which other Legion members may appear in future episodes of the show. and whether we'll finally see live-action versions of some of the more quirky characters like Matter-Eater Lad and Arm-Fall-Off-Boy. We look forward to whatever other surprises season 3 will bring us.
Supergirl season 3 returns with “Legion of Superheroes” on Monday, January 15 @ 8pm ET on The CW.
