Although developed by Greg Berlanti - architect of The CW's Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow - Supergirl season 1 debuted on CBS. Fans speculated whether Kara Danvers' (Melissa Benoist) world would ever tie into the Arrowverse, and it was confirmed earlier this year that Supergirl exists in another world as part of an entire multiverse of Earths. However, since Supergirl returned for season 2 on The CW - and the Girl of Steel is expected to participate in two upcoming Arrowverse crossovers - many have wondered if (or when) her world would merge with that of the Green Arrow, The Flash, and the Legends.
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently revealed that Supergirl's world won't merge with the rest of the Arrowverse prior to the big four-show crossover - which will air later this fall. However, the new extended trailer for Supergirl season 2 teases a comic book crossover event that did result in worlds merging.
The CW debuted a new trailer that features a number of scenes from the Supergirl season 2 premiere focused on Kara and her Kryptonian cousin Clark Kent aka Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). But, in one new scene, Superman and Supergirl are seen replicating the pose of the characters from the 1980s DC Comics crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Of course, the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline featured the death of Supergirl -- which, it seems safe to assume, will not occur on Supergirl. Certainly, this particular shot could simply be an homage to that iconic image of Superman and Supergirl -- a chance Berlanti couldn't pass up with the Man of Steel only expected to appear in two episodes (as of now) since the producer has previously referenced his love of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Still, this is the second reference to a Crisis storyline in these DC Comics series, with previous mentions to a future crisis occurring within The Flash's continuity, most notably in the show's pilot episode. If the Arrowverse were to adapt a version of the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline -- as they recently have with Flashpoint -- it would be a means to merge Supergirl with the Arrowverse. That is, if the producers of The CW's DC lineup are planning on such an event in the future.
In addition to the nod to Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Supergirl season 2 extended trailer features Wonder Woman's Lynda Carter as U.S. President Olivia Marsdin - set to make her debut in episode 3 - as well as anti-alien sentiment geared toward the Girl of Steel and Superman. The trailer also features Brenda Strong's as-yet-unnamed character who, as it was revealed in the premiere, is a member of Project Cadmus. All in all, the trailer seems to promise an exciting season 2 of Supergirl with the show officially a part of the Arrowverse on The CW.
Supergirl continues Monday October 17 with ‘The Last Children of Krypton’ at 8pm on The CW.
