Supergirl’s second season has seen a move to The CW network that has continued to bring changes big and small to the popular series, from an onscreen Superman appearance and redesigned headquarters for the DEO, to setting up onetime love-interest James Olsen for a new superhero job and (in particular) Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant giving up day-to-day operations running Kara’s day job to new (and potentially confrontational) boss figure Snapper Carr. But the series will also begin to showcase a broader stretch of DC Universe characters.
Now, the synopsis for the upcoming episode “Survivors”, fourth in season 2, teases the arrival of Miss Martian.
Released today as part of a slew of new upcoming-episodes synopses, the plot reveal for “Survivors” looks to continue Supergirl’s evolution into a more heroics-centric series after a first season that occupied a more traditional network-drama space for much of its initial run. The episode, set in the immediate aftermath of Miss Martian’s arrival onto the scene, involves the familiar genre-series scenario of an underground superhuman fight-club:
HANK AND M’GANN GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER; AN ALIEN FIGHT CLUB RUN BY ROULETTE GRABS SUPERGIRL’S ATTENTION — When Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) investigate the murder of an unregistered alien, the trail leads to an alien fight club run by Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman), the ringmaster who commands aliens to fight in mortal combat for the entertainment of rich humans. While trying to stop the fighting, Supergirl and Martian Manhunter find themselves up against a surprising opponent. Meanwhile, Hank (David Harewood) is thrilled to have found another Martian and tries to get to know M’Gann (guest star Sharon Leal) better. Supergirl takes Mon-El (Chris Wood) under her wing and begins to train him. James Marshall directed the episode written by Paula Yoo & Eric Carrasco.
Set to be portrayed on the series by actress Sharon Leal, Miss Martian (sometimes referred to by the name M’gann M’orzz or Megan Morse) is a fan favorite character introduced relatively recently to DC Comics continuity. A fellow survivor of the Martian race, in the original comics she was a White Martian who used shape-shifting abilities to masquerade as Green and dealt with a personality often at odds with itself while a member of a revived Teen Titans team. The full extent of her role on Supergirl has yet to be fully understood, along with the question of whether or not she will appear wearing her traditional “magical girl”-inspired costume.
Supergirl continues Monday with ‘The Last Children of Krypton’ @8pm on The CW.
