Here's why Tyler Hoechlin's Superman may die during Arrowverse's upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths event. Superman is arguably the most iconic superhero of all time and while he's not quite as cool as other DC characters like Wonder Woman or Batman, he's certainly more upbeat and optimistic. Richard Donner's Superman movie brought the comic to life in 1978 with the late Christopher Reeve coming to embody the role for an entire generation.
While Superman IV: The Quest For Peace brought Reeve's run with the character to a disappointing end, he's still considered the best actor to have donned the cape. Brandon Routh took up the mantle with 2006's Superman Returns, but while he received great reviews for his performance, the movie itself was met with a lukewarm reception. Henry Cavill later took over the role, beginning with Zach Snyder's Man Of Steel. Cavill's version of Kal-El is a somewhat brooding take, which was met with a mixed response by fans.
Cavill's Superman met his demise in the finale of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, where he's killed during a confrontation with Doomsday. Superman's death was a famous storyline from the comics and while he eventually came back to life in Justice League, it still came as a surprise the movie took the somewhat gutsy step to kill him. While the response to Cavill's run as the DCEU Superman has been mixed overall, the Tyler Hoechlin Superman from Supergirl has been greeted with a much warmer response.
Hoechlin's Superman carries that old-fashioned humor and optimism that was mostly lacking from the DCEU version. That said, he's only been used sparingly on Supergirl and within the Arrowverse itself, showing up for special events like Elseworlds. Now that The Flash season 5 has confirmed Crisis On Infinite Earths is coming to the Arrowverse, some major casualties should be expected.
Crisis On Infinite Earths is a major event from DC Comics in the 1980s, which resulted in the destruction of countless parallel universes. This storyline also killed off notable heroes, including The Flash and Supergirl. Since the Tyler Hoechlin Superman doesn't have his own show, many fans believe that instead of Supergirl dying during this epic crossover, it will be Superman who perishes instead. There's also the potential for the show to recreate the famous Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 cover art, but with Supergirl holding Superman's dead body, instead of the other way around.
With Arrow coming to an end in season 8, it appears Oliver Queen may also die during this event. Hoechlin has made a big impression with his charming, wholesome take on Superman, and while it would be a shame to see him go, Superman's death during this event would be hugely impactful. It would also mean passing the baton to his cousin Kara, but while there's always a chance the show will go in a different direction, it feels like the narrative has been building towards this moment.
