Supergirl still needs to fix one part of Kara Danvers’ story before it ends with season 6. The Girl of Steel will take to the skies of National City for a sixth and final season and, while there is still so much development and exploration left to do for Kara before Supergirl concludes, the series has yet to fully address one significant, recurring pattern in the series and it has to do with Kara Danvers' personal - particularly her romantic - life.

Supergirl season 1 set up Kara’s romantic interest in James Olsen. The two were coworkers at CatCo and James had the benefit of already knowing her secret identity as Supergirl and it seemed like the pair were headed in the direction of potentially being an endgame relationship. Season 1’s exploration of romance on the show was paralleling The Flash’s Barry Allen and Iris West in many ways. However, Kara and James were not meant to be when they decided they were better as friends in season 2. Later in the season, Kara met Mon-El, the arrogant and condescending prince of the planet Daxam. He and Kara began dating, but their relationship was steeped in toxicity. Following the end of Kara and Mon-El’s relationship — in which he had to leave Earth to avoid the lead-filled atmosphere that affected Daxamites — Kara went several seasons without a love interest at all.

As such, Supergirl has yet to give the titular hero a full-fledged romantic relationship.  To be sure, the Arrowverse show has seen Kara show interest in and date a few of the men who have come into her life. But, unlike The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow — whose leading characters have lasting and stable relationships with their respective significant others — Supergirl has gotten little in the way of a stable relationship, but Supergirl season 6 could finally rectify this glaring issue.

Kara and Mon El Stand with each other outside

Of course, not having a lot of romance in a superhero show is not necessarily a bad thing, especially considering how Supergirl’s writers can’t seem to settle on anyone for Kara in particular. However, one can argue that a good romance allows characters to evolve in various ways and adds another dimension to their development and journeys. Alex Danvers has had two stable relationships on the show thus far, all without ignoring her job-related plots and family time. Similarly, Nia Nal and Brainiac have had time to establish a relationship fans can root for, whereas Kara has been left on the romantic sidelines for years now. It’s an egregious oversight considering she’s the series lead.

With Supergirl approaching its final season, the series needs to give Kara a decent romance. It’s rather glaring that other Arrowverse leads are able to balance love, work, and superhero obligations without it being an issue, yet Kara gets the short end of the stick in the romance department. Supergirl season 6 can certainly sprinkle in a romantic subplot and, with 20 episodes in the last season, there is plenty of time to do so without taking away from any other storyline. Since William is already there and the pair has gone on a date, it’s possible the writers can deepen the relationship further and make it more meaningful. It doesn’t have to be an endgame ship, but Kara surely deserves some love after going so long without it.
