Melissa Benoist says goodbye to the Arrowverse as Supergirl season 6 has wrapped production. In 2020, it was announced that Supergirl season 6 would be the final one for the Girl of Steel, with the first seven episodes airing in the early half of 2021 to fill in the gap left by Superman & Lois on The CW's schedule. The final thirteen episodes of the series will start airing on August 24, 2021.
Melissa Benoist was cast as Supergirl in January 2015, after CBS ordered the series to pilot. She was a rising star having appeared as Marley Rose on the hit series Glee for two seasons. When she booked the role of Supergirl, her film Whiplash was nominated for multiple Academy Awards and she had roles in the films Danny Collins and The Longest Ride. For the past six years, audiences have tuned in to see her play Kara Zor-El of Krypton as a member of the Arrowverse, fighting alongside other heroes like The Flash, Green Arrow, and the Legends of Tomorrow.
With the first new episode of Supergirl in three months set to return in a matter of weeks, it appears the cast and crew have finally wrapped production on the series. Melissa Benoist took to Instagram to celebrate the wrap on the series alongside David Harewood and Chyler Leigh, her two co-stars that have been there since the very beginning of the series. Her caption thanked the cast and crew, who she sees as family, as well as all those who stayed viewing for the past six years.
Supergirl has had quite a ride since it was first announced. Airing for one season on CBS, the show faced a fear of cancellation early on before it was moved over to The CW in season 2. Various cast members have left the series, with many joining over the years. Classic DC heroes like Brainiac 5, Dreamer, and even Superman himself have been introduced into the Arrowverse alongside villains like Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor. The character of Supergirl is now more well known to general audiences than at any time in her history, all thanks to the series and part of that success is due to Benoist's performance as Supergirl.
Benoist's time on Supergirl has earned her both great career success as well as personal success as she met her husband Chris Wood, who played Mon-El on the series, and recently gave birth to the couple's son in 2020. As she hangs up the cape, a new incarnation of the character played by Sasha Calle will make the jump to the big screen in The Flash. Whatever fate remains Supergirl is yet to be seen. She may die at the end of her series like Oliver Queen did in Arrow, or be allowed to ride off into the sunset as Jefferson Pierce did in Black Lightning. One thing is for certain, Supergirl the series has left its mark on Benoist's career, and Benoist has left her mark on the Supergirl character that will be remembered for generations.
