Supergirl dropped a new season 5 poster on social media that shows off her new suit. The series will take part in the epic Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover alongside the other Arrowverse shows, but first there are new cast members and storylines to deal with. The aftermath of Lena (Katie McGrath) discovering Kara's secret identity is sure to be a big one, as is James Olsen's (Mehcad Brooks) departure from the show.
Fans first caught a glimpse of Kara's new suit on Melissa Benoist's Instagram before it was officially unveiled at Comic Con. While many were surprised by the switch from skirt to pants, Supergirl was due for a costume change going into her fifth year. Arrow and The Flash, which are Supergirl's predecessors in the universe, have undergone their own outfits upgrades this season as well.
The poster, first published on the show's official Twitter, centers Kara's suit but also includes the rest of the cast. As the frame offers a close-up of the Girl of Steel, her red boots are cut off. But the photo provides a more detailed look at the suit's design, as well as the new cape and hairstyle. Kara's expression is also serious and determined, underlying the strength and power that her costume emanates. It's a brand new day for Supergirl, and she seems readier than ever to face it head on.
But Supergirl is far from alone on the latest poster, as she's surrounded by her friends and family. The story being told is clear as day, given the tagline of "United We Stand." Furthermore, the role each team member plays can be extrapolated from their respective outfits as well. Nia (Nicole Maines) and James both work at CatCo with Kara, but Nia is shown in her Dreamer outfit while James is out of his Guardian suit. This implies that Dreamer will be more relevant to Supergirl's superhero side while James will be dealing with Kara's journalism while he's still around. Meanwhile, Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai) is now part of the team, though whether she will be fully integrated into the DEO or stay on the civilian side is unclear
Supergirl season 4 was all about divisions, so it's refreshing to see the show remind its audience that the team is stronger together. Supergirl's new suit doubles as a metaphor for strength, though it has garnered criticism from a few fans who feel it's alienating them from the character. Whether you prefer the Girl of Steel in a skirt or pants, though, everyone can agree that she's more than her costume. Supergirl stands for justice and values her friends more than anyone, both things that are perfectly represented on this poster.
