The CW has released the first official image of Kara's evolved costume in Supergirl season 5 and announced Julie Gonzalo and Staz Nair as new cast members. Launched in 2015, Supergirl started its run on CBS as a seemingly standalone DC superhero television series before it officially became part of the Arrowverse during its first crossover with The Flash. It moved to The CW for its second season after that, and has been a central part of the network's shared DCTV universe ever since.

As a result, Supergirl herself will have an important part to play in this year's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, an event that promises to change the Arrowverse in profound and permanent ways. Supergirl's season 4 finale even partially set the stage for Crisis by showing The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) bringing Malefic J'onzz - J'onn's brother and archenemy - to Supergirl's earth to stir things up. It's a good thing that Kara's getting an upgraded super-suit this season, then.

Melissa Benoist took to Instagram a few days ago to reveal Kara's new costume in Supergirl season 5. The CW has since unveiled an official photo of the suit at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, and confirmed two new actors for the season ahead. You can check out the image below.

Kara new outfit, as seen here, swaps out the red skirt that she's worn since season one for a pair of super-pants. The costume was conceptualized by the show's costume designer Victoria Auth and created by Ironhead Studios and Bill Hargates Costumes. Kara's fellow Arrowverse heroes Oliver Queen and Barry Allen have gotten similarly evolved super-suits on Arrow and The Flash in recent seasons, so it only make sense for Supergirl to follow their example. Showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner further issued a statement about the costume, saying "We’re beyond excited to update Supergirl’s iconic suit. We think her new image is strong and powerful. We hope the fans are as excited about it as we are".

In addition, Gonzalo (Veronica Mars) and Nair (Game of Thrones) are now official cast members for Supergirl season 5. Per The CW, Gonzalo is playing Andrea Rojas aka. Acrata, a DC comic book character who was previously adapted for television by Smallville. Her Arrowverse counterpart is described as a "polished businesswoman and heir to a Central American tech empire" who's unapologetic about who she is, but has "a mystical secret". Meanwhile, Nair will play William Dey, a character created for the show who's described as "a cynic and a sellout who looks down on Kara’s earnest idealism" and just wants to get the next big story, but is endangered by his "problematic" ties to the criminal underworld. Both of these characters will make an appearance during the season 5 premiere, so fans won't have to wait long to find out how they fit into the season's overarching storyline, either.
