Supergirl season 3 villain Reign will eventually wreak havoc on National City, but starts out under the more unassuming guise of a woman named Samantha. Following the tease from the end of last season that another pod made it off Krypton, we know that the Worldkiller known as Reign will be the big bad on Supergirl this year. Though the character doesn't have a ton of backstory in the comics, she has served as a formidable foe for Supergirl before, thanks to her being engineered by the Kryptonians to be a destroyer of planets.
When the new season of Supergirl kicks off, however, Reign will simply be Samantha (Odette Annable). Thanks to the previously-released Supergirl season 3 premiere images, we already know that Samantha and her daughter will be put in harm's way in their first appearance on the show. Over the course of season 3, Samantha's Reign personality will begin to emerge - along with her powers. The possibility of harm coming to her daughter will no doubt help to accelerate that transformation. In the meantime though, Annable will be playing a game of balance.
EW spoke with Annable about her roles as both Samantha and Reign in Supergirl season 3. Samantha will start out as a single mother trying to make her way through a relative normal life. Over time, however, more hints of Reign will start to emerge. As Odette put it:
"What I think is really special about this storyline is it’s a slow play and you’ll get to see this whole heartbreaking story unfold in a really — they’re taking their time with it, and we have the time to do it. I think the audience is really going to hopefully relate."
Though Annable hasn't been privy to all the future plot lines, she knows she won't be suiting up as Reign on Supergirl right away. For now, she's sticking to the role of Samantha, a character who has something mysterious lurking beneath her surface, according to Odette:
"For right now, it’s her discovering. Clues are coming up and she’s slowly discovering that something is happening. That’s all that I know so far."
The idea of having Reign contained within an unknowing other personality continues Supergirl's theme of dual identities. This will be especially at the forefront of season 3, as J'onn grapples with his Martian and Earth sides and Kara confronts her dual heritage. As for whether the birth of Reign will see the arrival of more Worldkillers, we'll have to wait and see. As Odette put it:
"So far, it’s just me, from what I know, but it would be cool if I was fighting and had this epic showdown and all of a sudden my buddies came along to play. I mean, being bad is good. It’s always fun."
The concept of the Worldkillers could easily continue to provide Supergirl with worthy villains in the future. In the meantime, though, Samantha's transformation into Reign should offer plenty of conflict for the season that lies ahead.
Supergirl season 3 premieres Monday, October 9 on The CW.
