Kevin Smith has announced his return as director for an episode of Supergirl's upcoming third season. Smith, who is well-regarded by a majority of the comic book fandom, has steadily been increasing his presence in the DC TV universe over the past few years. Beginning in 2015 with a second season episode of The Flash, Smith's work as a director in the Arrowverse has been generally well-received by both fans and critics alike, thanks in part to his experience behind the camera and the writing behind each of the episodes.
In addition to directing another episode of The Flash last year, Smith crossed over onto another notable DC TV series by directing not just one, but two episodes of Supergirl season 2. News on whether or not Smith would be returning as a director throughout any of the new Arrowverse seasons later this year has been surprisingly absent over the past few months, though, even as shows like The Flash and Supergirl have begun principal photography on their third and fourth seasons, respectively.

That was until today, anyway, with Smith announcing through his official Twitter account that he will be directing another episode of Supergirl in the third season. While a cleverly-placed pen has obscured the title of the episode in Smith's tweet, the photo does reveal that Smith will be helming the fifth episode of the new season, based on a script written by Eric Carrasco and Cindy Lichtman. Without a title, there's really no way of knowing for sure what the story or premise of the episode is going to be. For what it's worth, however, both Carrasco ("Survivors," "Supergirl Lives," "Exodus," and "Alex") and Lichtman ("Manhunter," "Luthors") have had their fair share of time working within the show's universe as writers. Based on how early into the season Smith's next episode will be, it's entirely possible that the writer/director could helm another installment sometime later on in the season as well.
The Flash and Supergirl aren't the only comic book shows that Smith has expressed interest in directing for over the years either. In addition to wanting to write and direct an episode of Arrow eventually, Smith has also been open about wanting to direct a Legends of Tomorrow episode or even working with FOX on a Gotham episode at some point. Now, whether or not any of that will happen remains a mystery, but considering the goodwill that Smith has garnered amongst the DC creative execs and TV showrunners, it's more likely than not that this won't be the only Smith-directed Arrowverse episode fans can expect to see when these new seasons begin.
Supergirl season 3 premieres Monday, Oct. 9 at 8pm on The CW.
