An exclusive clip from 'Wake Up', tonight's new Supergirl episode, shows J'onn J'onzz struggling to reconnect with his father Myr'nn (Carl Lumbly) after the elder J'onzz was found alive and imprisoned in a White Martian prison camp for centuries. Though his son was able to free him and even reclaim the Staff of K'lar, an ancient relic with psychic properties before taking his father back with him to Earth, it looks as though the father-son relationship isn't what it used to be and the two have their work cut out for them if they're ever going to find common ground again.
'Wake Up' is a turning point of sorts for Supergirl season 3, as it promises the return of Mon-El and leads to the introduction of the Legion, who will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the season (and perhaps even the Arrowverse) moving forward. Mon-El's return has been on the table ever since the season 2 finale saw Kara's love interest flee Earth following a Daxamite invasion and in response to the last-ditch effort by Lena Luthor to make the planet's atmosphere uninhabitable for the would-be alien invaders. The finale left Kara with a broken heart and audiences wondering when Chris Wood's Daxamite hero might be seen again.
Season 3 has been partially defined by returns both expected and unexpected, a theme that even had its own twist in last week's 'Midvale', which sent Kara and Alex back home to cope with their respective relationship woes. But perhaps the most surprising return is that of Myr'nn, as it's unlikely anyone had odds on J'onn's dear old dad learning the ways of Earthlings early on in season 3. It is the unexpected nature of J'onn and Myr'nn's reunion, then, that may be the first roadblock in their new relationship. Check out a full synopsis of 'Wake Up' below:
"When Winn (Jeremy Jordan) and the team discover an alien ship has crash landed deep underwater beneath National City, Kara/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) is called in to investigate. Meanwhile, Hank (David Harewood) attempts to bond with his father, Myr’nn (guest star Carl Lumbly). Samantha (Odette Annable), eager for some understanding of the changes she has been experiencing, looks to her estranged mother, Patricia Arias (guest star Betty Buckley), for answers."
As seen in the above clip, David Harewood and Lumbly have a strong chemistry with one another, which lends itself nicely to the dynamic being explored between their characters. It looks as though, during his time on Earth, J'onn has perhaps assimilated into his Hank Henshaw role a little too much for his father's liking, turning their outing for a cup of coffee (or "brown water") into a discussion of whether or not Myr'nn's son has been the real prisoner here on Earth.
Hopefully this will be explored more as the season moves forward and Myr'nn continues to explore what his son's new home has to offer. With so many new characters being introduced there's a question as to just how much time Supergirl will have to devote to J'onn and his father's storyline. But if this clip is any indication it's one that the show plans to stick with.
Supergirl 'Wake Up' airs tonight @8pm on The CW.
