The CW has released the first trailer for Supergirl season 3 at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 today. After first premiering on CBS two years ago, Supergirl transferred over to The CW last year for its second season, and it has since enjoyed steady viewership among the rest of the network's DC Comics shows: Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Although the series technically exists in its own corner of the multiverse, that hasn't prevented the characters, namely Supergirl, from crossing over with the other Arrowverse shows on occasions.
In addition to joining the rest of the multiverse's heroes in defending the multiverse, Supergirl had quite the story arc last season. Audiences were treated to their new small-screen Superman as well as glimpsed General Zod and the Legion of Super-Heroes, though it's unclear if the latter two will have roles in the upcoming season. If not, then there's still plenty of things on Kara Danvers' plate -- and today's new trailer is evident of that.
Today, The CW released the first trailer for Supergirl season 3 -- which is being headed by new showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner -- during the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, teasing the character's new story arc going forward, as well as the introductions of multiple new characters. You can watch the trailer in the section above.
The trailer teases lots of upcoming plot points, such as Kara's outlook on humanity (and her own humanity) in the wake of her life-altering decision to have Mon-El (Chris Woods) leave Earth, along with the rest of the Daxamites, so that she could save Earth, a decision that she'll have to live with for the rest of her life. The video also teases a few scenes with Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima, who recently confirmed her exit as a series regular, though she's expected to return next season in a recurring role). Furthermore, Calista Flockhart has been confirmed to reprise her role as Cat Grant in the season 3 premiere and recur throughout the season.
Aside from showing off established characters, the trailer also teases, and provides first looks for, upcoming new characters such as Morgan Edge, played by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Adrian Pasdar, and Reign, played by Cloverfield's Odette Annabelle. Furthermore, viewers get their first look at Smallville's Erica Durance as Kara's mother, Alura, previously played by Laura Benanti during the show's first two seasons. The role was recently recast, with Durance taking over for the character in the upcoming third season.
Supergirl returns for season 3 Monday October 9 at 8pm on The CW.
