We are less than a month away from Supergirl returning for its sophomore season - this time on The CW. While the show found a consistently-sized audience in season 1, it fell short of expectations for CBS, and has since moved to The CW. The move makes a lot of sense though, with other Greg Berlanti produced DC TV shows (Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow) already calling the network home. The CW seems to be pulling out all the stops to make sure Sueprgirl and the rest of its DC heroes are successful this television season.
One of the most exciting elements of the four DC TV shows being on one network, are the crossover possibilities. We know there will be one massive crossover that includes characters from Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, as well as a musical crossover between The Flash and Supergirl. While the possibilities presented by crossovers are enticing, the network and producers have made a clear investment in generating excitement for Supergirl, through character and casting announcements.
In the last several weeks and months, we have learned that characters like Miss Martian, Mon-El, and Metallo would be making appearances in Supergirl season 2, while Lynda Carter (the Wonder Woman TV show) was cast as the President of the United States. It's also been teased that frequent government antagonist, Project Cadmus (which was teased in season 1) would be a major enemy in season 2 of Supergirl. But those announcements are not the most exciting thing about season 2. That prize belongs to the announcement that Superman will be playing a prominent role in the first two episodes of the upcoming season.
While we have seen images of Tyler Hoechlin's (Teen Wolf) Clark Kent and Superman, now we get to see him in action. The CW has released a new promo (above) teasing Melissa Benoist's Supergirl arriving at the same potential catastrophe as Tyler Hoechlin's Superman, which gives us our first look at the two Kryptonian heroes flying side by side.
The promo is short, but boy is it sweet. The video starts with what appears to be some sort of government spacecraft spiraling out of control towards Earth. A voice-over, presumably a newscast, states "ground control has lost communication with the craft" while media mogul, Cat Grant, watches from her office. Then we see Superman jump to action, and simultaneous newscasts, presumably from Metropolis and National City, stating their hope that their respective heroes are seeing what has occurred. Then, we see Supergirl and Superman suspended in air together, before shooting each other a look, and then flying off to save the day.
So yes, while the promo is short, it does a very good job of furthering the anticipation for the series' upcoming season. Love or hate the casting of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, it is hard to deny the excitement of seeing the two iconic heroes side by side in live action. Supergirl states "I've dreamt of this moment, the two of us teaming up." It will be interesting to see the dynamic between the two, as we already know it may cause some conflict with Kara's sister, Alex. What we know for sure, is that we only have to wait a few short weeks to find out.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday, October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same time slot on Wednesday, October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday, October 10th, andLegends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday, October 13th.
