One of last season's most anticipated new dramas was CBS' first superhero series in over ten years. Starring Glee alum Melissa Benoist as the popular DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, Supergirl became the fall's highest rated premiere, before settling in at around 7.7 million viewers a week. Many critics praised the series' heart and feminist slant, including Kara's strong friendships with her sister Alex Danvers (played by Chyler Leigh) and boss Cat Grant (played by Calista Flockhart).
Yet not all reviews were entirely positive, as many critiqued the series' storylines and cheesy special effects. At the end of the season, Supergirl was on the bubble, and no one was sure if it'd be renewed. But before CBS could decide, the show was moved to sister network The CW, where fans always thought it would be more at home. Of course, some changes had to be made in the process, like a smaller budget and less Cat Grant, but most believe the move was for the best.
At this point, season 2 of Supergirl has been filming for a little over a month, yet details are being kept under wraps. New trailers from The CW have promoted its upcoming awesome superhero lineup, consisting of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow. Now Supergirl has joined the mix with an exciting new promo (above), featuring the newest hero in town and all the action you can expect from the series.
Although the promo still doesn't show any new footage from season 2 of Supergirl, it does highlight some of the series' most memorable baddies from last year. Livewire controlling electricity, bad Kryptonians, android Red Tornado, armored alien Master Jailer, blue supervillain Indigo and many more grace the 43 second promo. The video also doesn't miss out on reminding fans of the show's trademark humor and hot cast with Cat's classic line when The Flash star Grant Gustin came to visit back in March: “You look like the attractive yet nonthreatening racially diverse cast of a CW show."
It's clear now that Supergirl fits right in at The CW, more than it ever did on CBS. The shiny action and upbeat tone of the new trailer is so similar to the other CW shows, that it's hard to believe it was ever on another network. Plus, more crossovers between the shows are already planned, including a two-episode Supergirl and The Flash musical event. While a crossover already happened last season (even though the timing of events was an episode off), this shift to a new network will allow Supergirl to capture a stronger (but maybe not larger) audience than it did before.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th, and Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 17th.
