As Warner Bros and DC Films work on expanding the DC Extended Universe on the big screen, The CW has continued to add programs to the separate DC universe it has built on TV. The latest step involved bringing Supergirl over from CBS for its second season; and now, finding ways for Kara Danvers/Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) to be more involved with the other series that make up The CW's Flarrowverse (as it's sometimes called).
As Supergirl works its way in closer with The Flash, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow (and the eventual four-way crossover between them), the second season of the show will now have something in common with season two of The Flash. Not only have the two series crossed-over already once before, but now a crossover of sorts will happen behind the camera too.
During the DC TV portion of the CW panel at the 2016 Summer Television Critics Association press tour, it was revealed that not only is Kevin Smith returning to direct an episode for season 3 of Flash, but will also step into the world of Supergirl.
Smith's return to the DC TV universe should not come as a surprise after his first effort on The Flash episode 2.21, "The Runaway Dinosaur", was generally received favorably by viewers. For someone with such a strong connection to comics, Smith is obviously very excited to work on Supergirl, and even shared the following Tweet, further confirming the news:

Now that Smith is once again back in the DC TV universe with Supergirl, making stops to direct an episode of Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow would complete his journey through the universe. It is unclear if this will be the case, or even if Smith has the desire to do so, but CW is clearly happy with what he brings to the table; so if he is interested, it could probably happen. There has yet to be any indication as to what episode in particular Smith will direct in season 2, but the recently announced musical crossover is probably not the case. However, to get a general idea at what the episode could include, the events described in the new season synopsis should give some clues as to what we could expect.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
